WINNERS
Coquitlam residents who competed in this summer's London Olympics - with some bringing home hardware from the international event - were honoured by Mayor Richard Stewart and city council on Monday. The athletes received jackets with the city logo as well as floral bouquets for their efforts. At the council meeting were: BMX cycling coach Adam Muys; Paralympic runner Dustin Walsh; bronze medal soccer player Brittany Timko; gymnast Brittany Rogers; and silver medal indoor cyclist Jasmin Glaesser. Freestyle wrestler Haislan Garcia and BMX rider Tory Nyhaug were not able to attend Monday's recognition ceremony.
CROSSROADS CASH
Crossroads Hospice Society's development officer Anna Wilczewski and executive director Barb Henham last month accepted $1,770 from Doug Metzler and Irene Brown - the fundraising organizer and president of the Royal Canadian Legion in Port Coquitlam. Branch 133 collected the cash in memory of Tracy Metzler, Doug's daughter who died at the hospice. In the 10 years since Doug started his campaign to outfit the hospice rooms with televisions, he and donors have also brought in $23,700 for the society. Meanwhile, Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay joined in song with George Balzer (Summer Sunday Concerts organizer), Anna Wilczewski (Crossroads' development officer) and Ken Catton (VP and GM of Pacific Coast Terminal) to praise the success of the eight-week music concert series at Rocky Point Park, which raised $3,200 for Crossroads. The sixth annual Summer Sunday Concerts was sponsored by PCT.
BANK ON COPS
Cyclists with the Canadian Cancer Society's Cops for Cancer fundraiser made a stop at Coast Capital Savings (Westwood branch) in Coquitlam on Sept. 25 during their Tour de Coast. The credit union is a tour sponsor, and members and staff have helped to raise nearly $2 million for the cause in the past 15 years.

A Tri-City society that provides care to terminally ill patients has a new board of directors. Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore last month accepted an award at the Union of BC Municipalities' annual convention in Victoria for his city's social media outreach efforts. PoCo took the accolade for having "best practices" in engaging its residents online.
YUMMY!
A socially responsible school in Port Coquitlam is selling fair trade chocolates this fall to support its academic and extra-curricular studies. Spokesperson Rachel Goetz of Hope Lutheran Christian School said in a news release, "I believe that selling fair trade chocolates for our fundraiser is a great way to educate both our children and our community about the issues of child labour and slavery in the chocolate industry."
