A former Gleneagle secondary student is in Doha, Qatar for two weeks for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Coquitlam's Anjali Appadurai will be a delegate with others from the College of the Atlantic to talk about the future of the earth with the student organization Earth In Brackets. Appadurai, a graduate of the Lester B. Person United World College of the Pacific in Victoria, gained attention last year for her youth statement about climate change delivered in Durban, South Africa.
A Coquitlam resident has been named Business Person of the Year by the Surrey Board of Trade. Jason Zanatta, president of Novo Textiles Co., described the accolade as an honour. "I am very fortunate to have such a great team that works so tirelessly every day to build and grow Novo Textiles. Without them we would not have the passion, insight and drive that fuels innovation and great ideas within the business," he said in a news release.
Coquitlam RCMP officers are doing their part this month for Movember, a campaign designed to build awareness and raise money for prostate cancer research and male mental-health initiatives. The "Mantastic Mounties" led for the third year in a row by Const. Ryan Ziebart (of the Explosive Disposal Unit) are hoping to beat last year's collection of $13,000 - the second highest in the country among police teams taking part in the effort. As of Tuesday, the 26 members from Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam had brought in more than $7,400 for the cause, which sees participants grow moustaches during November. "We are all touched by cancer in one form or another so help us make cancer a thing of the past by donating and let's bring an end to this terrible disease," Ziebart said in a news release. Co-operators agents Ted Leung of the Sunwood Square branch and Jaspal Brar of the Newton branch recently established a bursary to assist single parents studying at Douglas College, which has a campus in Coquitlam. The bursary will be awarded annually and will assist two business administration students struggling to pay for tuition, rent and daycare expenses.
