CROSSROADS HELP

Crossroads Hospice Society recognized several donors this month who have helped the Port Moody-based organization care for terminally ill people.

Coast Pacific Wire and Alarms of PoMo checked in $250 for the group, money that was raised through a BBQ and raffle of a trip for two to Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, Crossroads past board chairperson Robert Tanaka was on hand for a $1,000 donation from RBC's Coquitlam Town Centre employees, who took part in the bank's Day of Service program.

And Linda Jackson, a retired Telus employees and Crossroads volunteer, rang in $5,220 to the non-profit group on behalf of her former company. The cash came through the Telus Charitable Giving Program.

RCH MOMS, KIDS

Laurie Tetarenko, vice-president of the foundation for the Royal Columbian Hospital, which serves the Tri-Cities, was with CKNW Orphans' Fund executive director Jen Schaeffers this month to announce support for Lower Mainland families who need financial help while a child or pregnant mother is hospitalized at the New Westminster hospital.

The new fund covers costs such as grocery and gas vouchers, transit tickets, breast pumps and accommodation. The grant will help families that live within 50 km of the hospital.

60 YEARS

Families part of the Simon Fraser Society for Community Living celebrated 60 years of the Coquitlam-based organization that helps children, youth and adults with developmental challenges.

The 1950s-themed picnic, held in Port Moody on Sunday, included a soda fountain, White Spot food, a photo booth and entertainment. The group serves about 2,000 people today.

NEW BOARD

There's a new board of directors for the Crossroads Hospice Society.

The Port Moody-based centre that helps terminally ill patients is now headed up by: Jason Jakubec (Lawyers West) as chairperson; Dr. Tony Taylor (Convergent Healthcare Consultants) as vice-chairperson; John Stubbs (retired SFU historian) as treasurer; and Natalie Lisik (Share and Simon Fraser Society for Community Living) as secretary.

The new directors appointed are: Kent Bruyneel (Bruyneel & Co. Certified Accountants); Alice Hale (Chevron Canada Lubricants Division); John Meneghello (Vancouver Transportation Club); Roland Mitchell (a retired charter accountant); and Terry Wright (Crossroads).

The returning board directors are: Catherine Burns (IRM Training Solutions); Ken Catton (retired, PCT Terminals); and Peter Xotta (Port Metro Vancouver).

SUPER READERS

More than 3,500 students received gold medals this month for reading every day as part of the Port Moody Public Library summer reading club.

The hardware was courtesy of the RBC Foundation. Kids who finished their 50 days of reading in the PoMo club can still pick up medals at the library when complete reading records and calendars are presented.
