FULL CUPBOARD
Envision Financial, which has a branch in Coquitlam, is celebrating after its successful Full Cupboard campaign to help food banks around B.C. Over the past year, the credit union brought in nearly $98,000 and more than 11,600 pounds of food for the cause. That total includes $3,427 raised in Coquitlam for the Share food bank, which provides food to an average of 420 households a week.
PORTER WINS
Students at Coquitlam's Porter Street elementary were named champions of the Reading Link Grand Challenge last month. The contest, held at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey, saw Porter's Reading Monsters beat out 11 other teams to take the title. Second place went to the Classy Turtles from Abbotsford's Prince Charles elementary while third place was awarded to the Legendary Readers from Port Coquitlam's Hope Lutheran elementary.
HELPING HANDS
Crossroads Hospice Society deposited a $2,500 cheque from RBC last month to support Pacific Coast Terminals' ongoing sponsorship of the Port Moody organization. "RBC Royal Bank believes in building strong communities and as they understand support of Crossroads is important to Pacific Coast Terminals, they wanted to share in that support by donating $2,500 to Crossroads Hospice Society," said RBC VP Tracy Price in a news release.
RCH CASH
A construction company recently dug into its pockets to donate to the Royal Columbian Hospital, which serves the Tri-Cities. Kingston Construction of Surrey contributed $21,500 to the hospital foundation in memory of its founder Ben Backman. The money will be used to buy video light-source equipment to help doctors diagnose patients with cancer, the disease that claimed Backman in 2009.
PCT CASH
Two students at Heritage Woods high school and another at Port Moody secondary have won scholarships from one of the city's major employers.This week, Pacific Coast Terminals announced it had given $1,000 each to Kaya Newman and Zaria Alibhai of Heritage and Sean Deheer of PMSS for future tuition toward their post-secondary education.The trio was chosen for their academics, athletics, community work or artistic leadership. "We have so much pride for the youth in our community and are happy to give back every year through our scholarship program," said PCT VP and GM Ken Catton in a news release. "We continue to be impressed by the applicants and know they will succeed in their future education."
