Mobil 1 Lube Express in Port Moody had a special showing this month of a prize-winning race car. The Mercedes McLaren F1 Racer - used during the 1998 Formula 1 season by drivers David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen - won the Australian Grand Prix that year, beating its competitors by an entire lap. The vehicle is now on tour in eastern Canada and the United States.

HELPING HANDS

Rotarians with Coquitlam Sunrise recently handed over $1,000 to the Douglas College Foundation for its I-CARE adult literacy program.

JAMAICA

Tri-City student Taryn Chang has returned from Braes River, Jamaica, with her family where they volunteered and saw how their donations were spent. For the past two years, the Changs have contributed more than $4,000 for housing and school supplies for a summer camp. Taryn also worked at an organic farm in the small, impoverish community.

CRUNCH

Former Olympian Leah Pells joined Alex Bell this month for his fifth annual Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge. The event, which has raised more than $13,000 to date for the Coquitlam Foundation's Diversity Initiative Fund, saw record holder Matt Sessions retaining his title. 27TH YEAR

Coquitlam's Rita Pollock checked off her 27th year of taking part in the 30th annual Bike Trek for the BC Lung Association this month. Pollock (seen here with long-time trekker Cliff Neyedi) joined 350 other cycling enthusiasts in the fundraiser on Sept. 6 and 7 who rode from White Rock to Cultus Lake and back.

NEW CHAIR

The philanthropic Coquitlam Foundation has a new leader and board member.Last week, the group elected lawyer Janet Toddington as chairperson and named Randy Webster to the organization. Toddington takes over from Julie Fisher, who will remain on the board executive as vice chairperson. Webster is the COO for MedRay Imaging in Coquitlam and is a member of the Tri-Cities' Chamber of Commerce.Meanwhile, Coquitlam Foundation launched its fall fundraiser, Kickin' It Country, which will take place on Nov. 7. HRH GOLD

Several Tri-City youth got to shake hands with royalty this and last week when they received their Duke of Edinburgh gold award at Government House in Victoria and at the Mission Hill Family Estate in West Kelowna.Prince Edward and his wife presented the certificates to Areez Saleh, Seung Jun Lee, Matthew Roots and Kenneth So of Coquitlam, Naseeba Kara, Nayab Kara and Miranda Riou-Green of Port Moody and Warren Dupasquier of Anmore.

Coquitlam RCMP Supt. Claude Wilcott this week recognized three Tri-City girls for their handiwork in an anti-graffiti poster campaign.Cindy Fan, 10, Liyarui Wang, 11, and Isabella Wark-Pantoja, 12, were each given a certificate for their art, which may be used to create utility box wraps in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.

Port Moody Coun. Zoe Royer made a $5,000 donation this month toward the rebuild of Mossom Creek Hatchery.
