ROLE MODELS

Riverside secondary students Sora Andrews, Jane Seo and Kiana Brambleby were among the students who strutted the catwalk at the Port Coquitlam school last week as part of a fundraiser for the multicultural leadership program and Japanese tsunami victims. The event, led in part by teacher Catherine Yamamoto, collected $900 for the two causes.

HIGH TEA

The Community Volunteers Services for Seniors - a seniors' outreach program in the Tri-Cities - hosted its 15th anniversary tea in Port Coquitlam last week to honour its volunteers and clients. Participants dressed up in period costume to mark the city's (and Port Moody's) 100th year.

SIP FOR TUITION

Coquitlam agents Rick Hickman and Ted Leung of The Co-operators are lending a hand to Douglas College students in financial need. The pair sponsored Unwined - Sip, Savour & Mingle, a fundraiser hosted at and by Coquitlam Centre that raised $23,000 for college education.

OUT AND ABOUT

Dave Bennie of the Port Moody Ecological Society was busy with students at last Friday's Port Moody Public Works Day. The centennial event was held outside of PoMo city hall.

HISTORY BUFF

The Port Moody Station Museum has a new programs co-ordinator. Brianne Egeto, an archaelogist with a passion for local history, joined the organization this month, specializing in collections and project management.

ROCK ON!

Port Moody musician Rocky Milino Jr. hosted a successful Rock4Child at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver this month with his band, Cause4Drama. The benefit concert for the CH.I.L.D. Foundation, which is headed up by former MLA Grace McCarthy, brought in nearly $400 for the cause. Also playing that night were Jesus Krysler, Danny Echo and Sonic Outcast. Voted as the fan favourites in last year's Seeds contest for 99.3 The Fox, Cause4Drama will appear at the Golden Spike Festival on June 29.

BINGO!

Members of the Tri-Cities' Rotaract dabbed in nearly $3,000 this month for a new universal playground at Castle Park elementary in Port Coquitlam. Mayor Greg Moore also took part in the event that collected cash for the second phase two. Castle Park has brought in $65,000 of the $123,000 needed. To donate to the playground, call 604-468-8620.

GREAT WORK

Cigarette filters, fishing lines, cans, bottles and an old rusty lawn chair were among the trash picked up at Coquitlam's Como Lake Park during the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up this month. The group of 23 people from Vanier Centre and School District 43 Continuing Education toured the park on May 17, said ELSA instructor Tiffany Kearns.

SCIENCE HEAD

A BCIT department head and Coquitlam resident is now the president of the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC. At its AGM last week, ASTTBC - the eighth largest professional organization in the province - named David Rutherford to the top job. An instructor and head in the geomatics engineering technology and degree programs, Rutherford joined ASTTBC in 1981 and has served terms as director on its governing council. He is a past member of the Association of BC Land Surveyors' board of examiners.

GET PHYSICAL

Three Western Canadian companies - including one from Port Coquitlam - were recognized recently for keeping their employees fit. Benefits by Design received the GoodLife Fitness Health & Wellness Leadership Award with FGL Sports and Devon Energy Canada. Last year, Benefits by Design sponsored an employee-wellness challenge with the goal of getting 60% of its 87 workers to exercise three to four times each week for 12 weeks.
