FOR THE KIDS
A Coquitlam-based charity that held its spring sale of used sporting goods last weekend is hailing the fundraiser as a success. KidSport Tri-Cities executive director Chris Wilson said the event at Port Coquitlam's Riverside secondary saw 1,335 attendees - up about 100 more than last spring - shop for second-hand sports gear. Organizers also collected $439 and eight boxes of food for the Share food bank. The $16,500 in proceeds will help to subsidize registration fees for at least 75 youth, Wilson said.
CLEAR MESSAGE
Coquitlam RCMP corporals Jamie Chung and Richard O'Rourke - along with ICBC's Kathleen Nadalin - were on hand at Port Coquitlam's Riverside secondary on Wednesday to congratulate Matthew Disu for his road safety poster. The Grade 12 student took first place in the Your Ad Here contest for his artwork that will now be featured across the province in an effort to slow drivers.
CASINO CASH
A gambling company that has a venue in Coquitlam recently rolled in $3,000 to the Tri-Cities' Crossroads Hospice Society. Great Canadian Casinos, which owns Boulevard Casino on United Boulevard, donated the cash as part of its sponsorship for the society's annual gala fundraiser, Treasures of Christmas. SHE'S A CHAMP
A Coquitlam "champ" will return as a junior counsellor at the War Amps 2013 B.C. seminar, which happens next week in Vancouver. Caroline McDonald, 19, a left leg amputee from cancer, has supported the organization for many years as a role model to younger amputees. War Amps is celebrating its 95th anniversary this year.
RACE TO THE TOP
The Tri-Cities' A.C. Slaters celebrated their success after Climbing the Wall this month to support the B.C. Lung Association. The 12th annual Stairclimb for Clean Air at the Vancouver Wall Centre on March 3 saw the team challenge the 48 storeys. The A.C. Slaters - made up of Coquitlam residents Bianca Kemp and Tiffany Chan, and Prestonne Domareski and Moira van den Akker of Port Moody - collectively raised $1,900 for the cause.
