Members of Fusion - the U15 boys' team with North Coquitlam United Soccer Club - spent their first Pro-D day by giving back to the community.

The players landscaped around the Coquitlam Legion building, pulling weeds, raking leaves and pruning bushes.

Team manager Sussi Passaglia said the Legion has donated in the past to the outfit, which for the past two years has won the district championship under coachesGodfrey Rockwood, Joel Rockwood andDerek Passaglia.

YOUNG HERO

A 14-year-old filmmaker from Belcarra has reeled in a national prize for her environmental work.

Miranda Andersen clinched the 2013 Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes - a $5,000 award given to young people in Canada and the U.S. who have made a difference in their community.

Anderson has made 10 films on topics such as using less plastic, disposing of e-waste ethically and saving salmon habitats. To read her blog, visit mirandaandersen.wordpress.com.

Twenty-four riders in the fundraiser Cops for Cancer stopped by Coquitlam's Thrifty Foods on Tuesday for a lunch, where store managers presented $1,000 to the team.

FIRE BUGS

Coquitlam-Maillardville MLA Selina Robinson suited up last week to experience a day as a firefighter.

The Fire Ops event was held by the BC Professional Firefighters Association and Vancouver Fire Services to coincide with the Union of BC Municipalities' convention in Vancouver. Coquitlam Coun. Craig Hodge also took part.
