FOX CASH

Students, teachers and staff in the Coquitlam school district hauled in $147,000 this past year in memory of Port Coquitlam hometown hero Terry Fox. The money was raised through school runs, said School District 43 superintendent Tom Grant at a board of education meeting this week.

PEDAL ON

A Port Coquitlam business that collected old bikes this past winter and refurbished them has donated the vehicles to families in need. Cap's Westwood Cycle distributed 42 of the bikes last Thursday. The recipients plan to use their bikes in the upcoming Wheel to Heal in support of the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation, Cap's owner Kelly Hobbis said.

DOUBLE DOUGH

A Coquitlam grocery store manager who set out to raise $10,000 for a child battling bone cancer has rolled in nearly double for the cause. Liam Sobey of Austin Height's Thrifty Foods camped out at his store this month to help Marko Marconato, a Port Coquitlam peewee hockey goalie receiving treatments at BC Children's Hospital. Sleeping outside for a week "was not an issue," Sobey said. "A little cold some nights but some long johns and a toque did the trick." To donate, visit the store on Mariner Way or go to www.childrun.com/thriftyfoodscoquitlam.

READERS

A group of bookworms at Coquitlam's Rochester elementary finished as the top Canadian team and won third place in a reading challenge. Last week, the Cosmic Readers took on teams from Seattle in a video conference at the University of the Fraser Valley and clinched the bronze accolade. To qualify, the Grade 5 Readers won the grand challenge on April 2 in Langley, competing against 10 teams.
