TOP CADETS
Port Coquitlam's army cadets were recently named the province's most outstanding corps. The 2893 Seaforth RCACC was presented with the Roy Rigby-Jones Cup, by PoCo MLA - and reviewing officer and former 2893 cadet - Mike Farnworth at its 43rd annual ceremonial review. Over the past year, the 89 cadets have canoed in Sechelt, snowshoed on Mt. Seymour and undergone field training in Chilliwack.
CHARITY GOLF
A Port Coquitlam realty team was on the links last month for its 29th annual charity golf tournament. The event sponsored by RE/MAX Sabre Realty at the Pitt Meadows Golf Club swung in more than $20,200 - money that will be donated to such groups as the Children's Miracle Network, BC Children's Hospital, Canuck Place Children's Hospice, Make A Wish Foundation, Crossroads Hospice and the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. To date, the tournament has brought in $432,110 for the causes, chairperson Gib Baxter said.
SCIENCE BOY
Port Coquitlam student Evan Naugler will soon be ending a two-week stint at a top international physics program. Naugler is with Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, located in Waterloo, Ont., for its International Summer School for Young Physicists.
OFF TO CAMP
Customers with Thrifty Foods, which has grocery stores in Coquitlam and Port Moody, helped to send kids with special needs to the Easter Seals camp this summer. The money was raised when shoppers bought organic Buck Brand Citrus navel oranges in February; in turn, Thrifty Foods donated $1 from every four-pound bag to the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities.
