SHE'S A CHAMP!
Carla Marino of Port Moody was in Vancouver this month for The War Amps 2015 BC Child Amputee (CHAMP) seminar.
The program, which is marking its 40th year, offers support to Marino and hundreds of other child amputees. The 15-year-old teen was also a junior counsellor at the seminar, acting as a role model and giving help to younger Champs.
COAST CASH
Coast Hotels has set up a scholarship at Douglas College that will provide $15,000 over the next three years for hospitality management students at the college, which has a campus in Coquitlam.
And the first recipients included two Coquitlam and a Port Coquitlam resident: Megane Leung (Coquitlam), Eisa Cala (Port Coquitlam) andBrian Li (Coquitlam).
GIVERS
Social workers at Port Moody's Eagle Ridge Hospital took part in the national Advance Care Planning Day last Thursday.
They held a display at the institution and spread the message to patients and staff about the role social workers play at the facility. Visit fraserhealth.ca/acp for more details.
And Coquitlam Search and Rescue officially thanked Coquitlam businessman Jim Allard on his birthday for his $10,000 donation toward the purchase of a mobile command centre.
Deputy fire chief Gary Mulligan, a longtime Allard employee, talked about founding SAR with Don Cunnings in 1972.

SCIENCE PRIZES
Hardware was handed out last week at UBC to three School District 43 students for their achievements in science.
Mike Roslikov and Danilo Lekovic of Summit middle and Janice Pang of Pinetree secondary competed at the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair from April 9 to 11.
And Roslikov earned a gold medal while Lekovic and Pang each took silver accolades in their respective categories.
As well Roslikov and Lekovic reaped a sponsored UBC computer science cash award. Roslikov also won the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC's top prize and trophy while Pang clinched a cash award from UBC Statistics.
Their accomplishments mean SD43 will be represented at the national science fair for the fifth year in a row.That fair takes place May 10 to 17 in Fredericton, NB.
THEY SCORE
The Port Moody Oldtimers Hockey Association netted more than $2,700 for the Crossroads Hospice Society at its league's second annual hockey pool and year-end banquet.
The group has supported a number of local charities since 1985 including youth hockey.
