FOX JERSEY
The father and three siblings of Port Coquitlam hometown hero Terry Fox were on hand to see Simon Fraser University retire his junior varsity basketball jersey last week.
"Of all the tributes and honours Terry has received this would be one that he would have most appreciated. Almost 35 years after the Marathon of Hope, Terry still inspires athletes and students at Simon Fraser," his brother Fred Fox said.
THAT'S UGLY
Anmore's Jordan Birch was before Port Coquitlam city council on Monday - and Port Moody council on Tuesday - to receive proclamations from mayors Greg Moore and Mike Clay for Ugly Sweater Day on Dec. 19. Birch's society raises funds for the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada.
MOUSTACHE
The Coquitlam RCMP "Mantastics" placed sixth in the country for police teams taking part in last month's Movember drive.
The fundraiser for men's health issues - specifically prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health challenges - brought in nearly $9,000 from the Mantastics. "Since 2009, the Mantastics have contributed over $51,000 for this worthy cause. I can't wait to see how much more the Mantastic we will raise in 2015," said spokesperson Const. Ryan Ziebart.
BEST WEB
A Tri-City MP's parliamentary website has been named one of the best in the country.
Samara Canada, a non-partisian charity, looked at 299 MP websites between May and July of this year and chose New Westminster-Coquitlam NDP MP Fin Donnelly's online presence (findonnelly.ca) as a winner.
INTO GEAR
Students of Douglas College, which has a Coquitlam campus, can now apply for a Chevron gas card.
The company has provided $5,000 in gas cards to help students in financial need who are enrolled in the faculty of child, family and community studies and have to get to practicum placements.
The placements provide hands-on learning experience that help students prepare for roles caring for at-risk youth, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
"We are very grateful for this generous contribution from Chevron Canada. Many of these students already struggle to pay for their education and this gift will help to ease their financial burden," said David Magnuson-Ford, director of development at the college foundation.
