ROTARY CASH
A $3,000 donation this month by the Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam Rotary clubs will help health sciences students at Douglas College, which has a campus in Coquitlam. The funding is aimed at Tri-City residents enrolled in general nursing, psychiatric nursing and health care support worker programs at the institution.
HOP HOP
Burke Mountain resident Rebecca Permack, a realtor with Royal Lepage West, hosted the fourth annual Easter egg hunt at Galloway Park in Coquitlam last Friday. Hundreds of families attended the event, which raised more than $5,600 for Tri-City Transitions.
HIGH FLYERS
Port Moody air cadets earned top honours - for the fourth year in a row - at a regional drill team competition in Abbotsford last week. The Phoenix 754 squadron was up against Fraser Valley groups to show off their personal discipline, coordination and teamwork skills. The win means Phoenix advances to the provincial event in Victoria on May 3.
SCRUB-A-DUB
Cole Rohrlack, Rhys Lefebvre and McColl Bishop rolled up their sleeves recently to spring clean with eco-friendly products. The Grade 7 students at Moody middle school in Port Moody say harsh chemicals poison the planet and they are recommending car washers use biodegradable soap.
BOOK WORMS
Porter elementary turned the page at the 12th annual Reading Link Coquitlam Challenge last week. The Coquitlam school's Reading Monsters team was named the 2014 champions at the contest held April 17 at the City Centre branch of the Coquitlam Public Library. The Wacky Word Wizards from Nestor elementary took second while Mr. Ocax's Henchmen from Rochester elementary placed third. They will advance to the grand challenge on Wednesday at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. In order to qualify, Grade 4 and 5 students read a selection of six books.
YWCA FINALISTS
Three Tri-City residents are finalists in the 31st annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards.Kristi Blakeway, a principal at Thomas Haney secondary,Anar Popatia, president of the Canadian Club of Vancouver, and Sheila Eddin,vice president of Transformation ICBC were named this week as 2014 Metro Vancouver nominees.The accolades honour individuals and groups who have made outstanding community achievements. The winners will be announced on June 3.
TECH CASH?
Two Tri-City schools have been shortlisted for the 2014 Recycle for Education computer lab contest.Alderson elementary in Coquitlam andMountain Meadows elementary in Port Moody are in the running to win $25,000 each fromStaples Canada to buy new technology and lab gear.
SILVER LINING
Seven Tri-City teens will get their silver level Duke of Edinburgh's Award at a ceremony in Burnaby on Saturday. Stephanie Lui, Raiya Jessa, Emily Kwong andChantane Yeung of Coquitlam,Shafana Kassam and Hilary Kong of Port Coquitlam andConrad Henderson of Port Moody will receive their accolades from B.C. Lt. Gov. Judith Guichon.
