SENIORS HELP
Multi-cultural programs in the Tri-Cities got a boost last month after the provincial government awarded $130,000 to SUCCESS. The grant to help Korean and Iranian seniors better integrate into Canadian society was announced Dec. 18 at the SUCCESS Tri-City Service Centre in Henderson Place mall, with Port Moody-Coquitlam MLA Linda Reimer on hand.
GOOD DEEDS
Members of the Port Coquitlam Running Room relayed in $400 to KidSport Tri-Cities on Jan. 1, proceeds that were raised during their 5k Resolution Run. KidSport executive director (and Coquitlam city councillor) Chris Wilson accepted the cash.
THANKS MIRANDA
Mossom Creek hatchery volunteers officially thanked Belcarra resident Miranda Andersen, 16, for her $5,000 donation last month. The Grade 11 student won the cash from the Museum of Nature, as the recipient of the 2015 Youth Nature Inspiration Award.
SAFE STREETS
Tracey MacGregor, Vancity assistant branch manager in Maillardville, joined the Children of the Street's Maura Fitzpatrick and Miranda De Jong for a $150 cheque presentation last month to support the Coquitlam non-profit's work to keep kids safe from sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
FOR THE ARTS
Vaudevillians Alannah Jacques, Doris Carruthers and Shirley Miller passed on $3,431 last month to help performing arts students at Douglas College, which has a campus in Coquitlam. Accepting the donation were Meg Stainsby, dean of Language, Literature and Performing Arts (left) and Hazel Postma, associate vice president advancement and alumni relations (right).
HOSPITAL HAUL
A developer with ties to the Tri-Cities hauled in $15,000 for the Royal Columbian Hospital last month. Aragon Properties' David Roppel presented the money to hospital foundation official Bruce Bouchard. Aragon Properties is the parent company of Port Royal Village Development Inc., which is building a riverfront community in New Westminster, where the hospital is located.
