SOUP'S ON

The launch of the Tri-Cities' Soup Sisters and Brother Brothers program last month was "simply amazing," said spokesperson Tara McIntosh. The program, which is in partnership with Eden West Fine Foods, supports Joy's Place, an emergency shelter for women and children who have experienced domestic abuse; the facility is run by Tri-City Transitions. After its Sept. 29 event, co-ordinators packed up 250 servings of fresh soups for the centre. Visit soupsisters.org for more information about the organization.

FOR THE BABES

Members of the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation of Canada recently handed over $28,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital - which serves the Tri-Cities - for a new neonatal brain monitor. The gear diagnoses and monitors complications resulting from asphyxiation or lack of oxygen at birth.

THIGH BURNER

Matt Sessions walked up and down the Coquitlam Crunch trail 14 times last month for a challenge - keeping safe his 2012 record of 17 consecutive trips in a 12-hour period. The fourth annual Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge on Sept. 7 raised $3,200 for the Coquitlam Foundation to help the Michael Coss Brain Injury Fund.

BUILDERS

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders' Association named its new board this month in Coquitlam.Among the directors are Port Moody's Lynn Harrison, principal of Harrison Marketing Resources, as chairperson; Ron Rapp of Coquitlam's Morningstar Homes, as first vice-chairperson; and Candy Hodson of Black Press, the parent company of The Tri-City News.

UNWINED

Hazel Postma of Douglas College recently thanked Coquitlam Centre mall's France Aere and Deborah Stetz for hosting Unwined, held earlier this year. The $10,000 collected from the event was poured into a bursary fund for the college students.

FIRE BLANKETS

Lorne Perry and Holly Smith from Port Moody Insurance met recently with the city's fire chief Remo Faedo and firefighter Wade Perrett to donate 15 Bipper blankets. The blankets will be used for the Red Cross CPR C classes being offered to the public by the firefighters' charitable society and Port Moody Fire/Rescue.

ROCK IT!

Coquitlam Centre mall kicked of its fall charitable campaign last month called Rock That Coat. This month, women are being encouraged to drop off their gently used ladies' outergear to the guest services department for the non-profit group Dress for Success Vancouver. In exchange, donors will be awarded with an entry form for a chance to win a $250 gift card. Visit coquitlamcentre.com.
