SPOTLIGHT: Teachers get PM prize

Two Tri-City teachers are among 22 educators in B.C. who received an award from Prime Minister Stephen Harper this week.

Coquitlam's John Procyk, who teaches Grade 8 to 12 science at Point Grey secondary school, got a national certificate while Scott Ormiston of Port Coquitlam was recognized at the regional level for his work with the Maple Ridge school district.

In total, 54 teachers from across Canada were honoured for teaching and for early childhood education excellence.

OUTDOOR GYM

Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore got a workout last Saturday when the city unveiled new outdoor equipment at Gates Park.

The gear replaces the heavily used machines that were installed in 2009. The updated equipment, which was donated by Telus, is suitable for all ages and abilities.

NEW TURF

Outdoor field sports groups helped to open a new turf field at Coquitlam's Town Centre Park last Saturday.

The north field was recently converted from grass to artificial turf at a cost of $2.5 million to taxpayers.

BUILDING BOARD

A national account manager with Black Press, the parent company of The Tri-City News, is on this year's board of directors for the Greater Vancouver Home Builders' Association (GVHBA).

Last week in Coquitlam, Lisa Farquharson was elected to the board with Ron Rapp as chairperson; Rapp is vice-president of construction for Morningstar Homes in Coquitlam. Also on the executive are: 1st vice chair Dan Glavind, Dick's Lumber and Building Supplies; 2nd vice chair Darren Cranston, Polygon Homes; and secretary/treasurer Avtar Johl, Platinum Group of Companies.

ZAJAC TRUCK

A summer camp for children with serious and chronic illnesses and disabilities had a much-needed donation this month, thanks to a company that does business in the Tri-Cities.

The Zajac Ranch for Children got a 2008 Ford F-150 truck from Kiewit/Flatiron, which designed and built the new Port Mann bridge over the Fraser River, connecting Coquitlam with Surrey.

ENTREPRENEUR

A Coquitlam resident has been named entrepreneur of the year by Ernst & Young.

Aaron Rokstad of Rokstad Power Corp. received the accolade in the Pacific Energy category. His company builds high-voltage power lines and related infrastructure.

RCH CASH

Coquitlam's Doug Eveneshen, chairperson of the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, this month accepted a $12,500 donation from Wade Winkler on behalf of his law firm, McQuarrie Hunter LLP.

The New Westminster-based hospital also serves the Tri-Cities.
