The foundation at Royal Columbian Hospital, which serves the Tri-Cities, has a new director for its major gifts. On Tuesday, Barbara Becker joined the organization to handle funding for the hospital's equipment, research, education, special projects and capital campaign.

ENVISION $

Two Tri-City charities are $15,000 richer after receiving grants from the Envision Financial Community Endowment. Children of the Street Society took in $10,000 for its sexual exploitation prevention programs while New View Society got a $5,000 boost to recruit volunteers.

PM AWARDS

Three educators who live or work in the Tri-Cities have been recognized by the prime minister.

This month, to coincide with World Teachers' Day on Oct. 5, Stephen Harper honoured a number of Canadian teachers including Jonathan Sclater, a Grade 4 and 5 teacher at Port Coquitlam's Westwood elementary school.

Meanwhile, certificates for excellence in early childhood education were also passed out to Port Moody's Pat Frouws of the Simon Fraser University Childcare Society in Burnaby, and to Coquitlam's Susan Woodward of Childgarden Preschool in Coquitlam.

HOME BUILDERS

Blake Hudema is the new chair of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders' Association. The Vancouver resident and v-p of Genstar Development was elected to the position at the group's AGM in Coquitlam last week.

Also selected to the executive board are: first vice-chair Lynn Harrison (Harrison Marketing Resources, Port Moody) and second vice-chair Ron Rapp (Morningstar Homes, Coquitlam) Meanwhile, the GVHBA presented its awards of excellence, handing Harrison and Steve Kurrein of Port Moody the Chair's Award of Honour, and Jeff Bain of JKB Construction Ltd. of Port Coquitlam with a Community Service Award.
