NO BULLIES
There was a pink wave at a Coquitlam business last month when it decked out its employees with pink shirts. Seon purchased the t-shirts for its staff to mark the annual Pink Shirt Day, which supports anti-bullying programs and positive messages for youth.
HELPING WOMEN
XROADS CASH
Last year's fundraising by members of the Port Coquitlam Royal Canadian Legion resulted in $3,000 for the Crossroads Hospice Society. Since 2002, branch 133 has brought in $30,000 for the Port Moody-based charity. Meanwhile, Crossroads also recently took in $1,400 from Dr. John Loh's Qi Gong group, which practices on Sundays at the Coquitlam Centre mall. To date, his club has raised more than $12,500 for Crossroads, said spokesperson Kelly Parry.
Cooper's Foods pumped in $1,300 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation during its annual Heart Fund Day last month, when a quarter from every grocery bag sold was donated to the charity.The proceeds will go to research, health promotion and advocacy programs in the province.
SFU HONOUR
Port Moody rower Krista Guloien was honoured by SFU last month. The university recognized the SFU criminology grad for her 2012 Olympic silver, at its Outstanding Alumni Awards event on Feb. 26.
SCORE!
KidSport Tri-Cities spring sale raised $19,200 last week to help local youth in need register for sports. Executive director Chris Wilson said nearly 1,300 people came out to shop at Riverside secondary, with 102 volunteers behind the counters.
RCH $
The foundation for the Royal Columbian Hospital, which serves the Tri-Cities, last month took in donations from two groups. The employees of Southern Railway of B.C. presented $6,000 for the hospital's urgent needs equipment campaign. As well, the G&F Financial Group Foundation handed over $9,700 to RCH for a neo-natal biliblanket.
HEARING GEAR
Two children in need of hearing equipment got a gift from Coquitlam's Phoenix Truck and Crane this month. The company donated $5,000 to Hearing for Kids, which is run out of Eagle Ridge Hospital in PoMo.
FREE SWIM
Coquitlam and PoCo residents will be able to take a dip for free thanks to a credit union. Westminster Savings announced it will continue with its free public swim program at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (7 to 9 p.m. on the first Sunday); City Centre Aquatic Complex (7 to 9 p.m. on the third Friday); and Hyde Creek rec centre (1 to 3 p.m. on the first Sunday).
