SPOTLIGHT: Vernon, Victoria cadet awards

Hyun-Min Shin, an army cadet with 2827 RCACC in Port Moody, was named top of the basic fitness and sport course at the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre, after its first intake to the three-week program. Meanwhile, air cadet Tony Choy of 754 RCACS Port Moody took an award for being the most improved cadet in his class. Choy, 15, earned the accolade from Doug Slowski for his performance in the the basic fitness and sports course at the Albert Head Air Cadet Summer Training Centre.And army cadet Alexander Basco of RCACC 2893 in Port Coquitlam accepted the award as the best cadet during his two-week general training course in Vernon. He won the award from Lt. Col. Nigel Whittakker.

SHINING STARS

Partners Tako van Popta and Wade Winkler of the law firm McQuarrie Hunter presented $10,000 to Adrienne Bakker, president and CEO of the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, which also serves the Tri-Cities. McQuarrie Hunter was a sponsor of the foundation's recent Shine gala, an event that raised $280,000.

HEALTH CHEQUE

James Darbyshire, chairperson of the Dr. Cam Coady Foundation, recently donated $2,000 to Douglas College's Laurie Kenward for a new award benefitting health information management students. Douglas College has a campus in Coquitlam, named after the late BC Lt. Gov. David Lam.

25 YEARS LATER

Students at Coquitlam's Gleneagle secondary will join Crossroads Hospice staff and volunteers on Saturday to formally dedicate a mural, recognizing the society's 25th year. Grade 10 and 11 art students under teacher Melanie Stokes and mural artist Tammy Pilon completed the project in April. The dedication will happen at 11 a.m. during the Crossroads' thrift store's ninth birthday party at 2780 Barnet Hwy. in Coquitlam.

FRASER PADDLER

A Coquitlam teen is now on a Fraser River adventure for 25 days, a 1,400-km journey run by the Rivershed Society of BC, a local non-profit group. The group of eight young people that includes Christian Krushel are on the sustainable living leadership program that started Aug. 1 near Mount Robson; the voyage by canoe, raft, shuttle van and by foot will end Aug. 24 at the Jericho Sailing Club in Vancouver."You're outdoors and you're plugged into nature," said program founder Fin Donnelly, the NDP MP for New Westminster-Coquitlam, in a news release. "When they complete the program, the participants have gained some practical skills and shared an experience that will inspire them to action."
