Kids on spring break can crush their opponents to win prizes in a Super Smash Brothers Brawl (Wii) tournament March 28 at Coquitlam Public Library.

The free tournament will run from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in Rooms 1 and 2 at the City Centre branch (1169 Pinetree Way). It will not feature any team matches, just five-minute free-for-all battles involving three or four players each. Participants can choose to play any character, though Meta Knight has a slight (10%) handicap.

Players who advance in the tournament (by winning or, sometimes, by placing second) must continue to fight with the same character while losers can choose another. The tournament will be in a double knockout format, meaning participants can continue playing - and will still have a chance to win prizes - until they have lost two matches.

Participants will be divided into two age categories: 14 years and under, and 15 and older; adults are welcome to compete in the older age category.

To play, you must register by emailing Chris at [email protected], although anyone can show up to watch.

The tournament will accept same-day registration if there is room in the age bracket to include more players, and the registrants arrive by 12:45 p.m. (15 minutes before the matches are set to begin). Snacks will be provided.
