On March 8, the Workout to Conquer Cancer, benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation will harness the power of hundreds of people who are ready to lunge, stretch, and sweat their way toward a world free from cancer and Coquitlam's Tommy Europe will be one of them.

Europe is the no?nonsense drill sergeant and host of the popular fitness shows The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp and Bulging Brides, both on Slice TV. He will be bringing his Shred Bootcamp to the Richmond Olympic Oval and is looking forward to motivating workout participants while putting them through their paces and raising funds for cancer research.

"We're going to be a good lively group and it's an event you don't want to miss," said Europe, who is the father of two little girls and a longtime supporter of the BC Cancer Foundation.

Although Europe has a reputation for toughness - he was one of the hardest-hitting defensive backs in the CFL and helped the BC Lions win the Grey Cup in 1994 - he promises his routine will be fun and easy to follow.

As well, Europe will be the MC for the event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes breaks, snacks, a healthy lunch and muscle-relaxing massages.

Participants in the inaugural Workout to Conquer Cancer must be at least 16 years old and will be required to sign a waiver, which is available online. As well, each participant must raise a minimum of $600 for the BC Cancer Foundation.

FITNESS CHALLENGE

But Europe said the effort to participate will be worth it - and lots of fun for those who join. "It's a full-day fitness challenge," he said adding that the seven fitness centres will be tailored to participants. "There something for everybody."

Some of the events include Zumba, Fusion Kickboxing, Hip Hop, Rock Your Core-Barre Fitness, Retro Aerobics and yoga.

Europe is probably best known for his Shred Bootcamp, which has been around for five years. As a personal trainer, he offers a tough-love approach with a regime that is constantly changing and improving. Participants get a first hand, practical experience of his brand of fitness, and what it takes to follow a healthy lifestyle.

Europe has also performed in numerous television shows and feature films such as Chaos, Human Target, V and Supernatural, and is currently making appearances as a Reebok ambassador.

His association with the BC Cancer Foundation comes from a desire to give back and to support lifesaving cancer research taking place at the BC Cancer Agency.

"I've had family members, grandmothers and friends who are going through and have gone through losses due to cancer. I do know the importance of raising the awareness of the cause," Europe said.
