The impact of social media on children will be the topic at a District Parent Advisory Council workshop for School District 43 parents next Thursday.

Jesse Miller, an authority on social media, will talk to parents on issues facing young people, who are increasingly turning to the internet for social engagement, gaming and learning. Miller's presentation "Two Lives" will discuss the realities facing youth as they become social media users and how parents can support their children and keep them safe.

In addition, there will be three workshops geared to parents of elementary, middle and secondary school students on how to stay connected with children's learning. Presenters will be Susan Ross, principal of Seaview elementary; Rob McFaul, principal of Montgomery middle; and Rob Zambrano; principal of Centennial secondary.

Parents must register for the Oct. 11 workshop by Tuesday, Oct. 9 by calling 604-939-3690 or emailing [email protected]; you must leave a name, telephone number and choice of interactive workshop (elementary/middle/secondary).

The workshop takes place in the theatre at Centennial secondary, 570 Poirier St., Coquitlam.
