Welcome to the long weekend everyone. It's B.C.'s 154th birthday and with nothing but sun on the horizon, it's a perfect time to kick back, be active or just fire up the grill in the back yard - just don't forget the sunscreen.

TODAY: Friday, Aug. 3

HEAD START

Jump into the August long weekend by hitting the great outdoors. Call up some friends and plan a hike through any of the Tri-Cities' beautiful regional parks, whether it's Minnekhada to the east or Belcarra to the west. And the kids will appreciate a chance to cool off from the summer sun with a trip to the pool. Either way, be sure to pack a picnic for a leisurely summer day.

Saturday, Aug. 4

CELEBRATE KOREA

Enjoy the culture of Korea at the 11th annual Korean Heritage Day Festival in Coquitlam's Blue Mountain Park (975 King Albert St.), from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be live entertainment, a singing competition, a clay-making contest for the kids and plenty of food. Admission is free and there's a free shuttle from Lougheed SkyTrain stop to the park.

FOLK FEST

Port Coquitlam's Village Vibe series features two stand-out performers today at the Leigh Square (2253 Leigh Sq.) bandshell. First up is Etienne Siew, a skilled guitarist who's been playing for more than a decade, who favours covers of earthy singers like Paolo Nutini, Ray La Montagne and the legendary Bob Marley. Next up is Wintercoast, an alternative folk-rock band with boat loads of energy (check them out at www.facebookcom/wintercoast). The show runs from 2 to 4 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 5

PIPE UP

Lions Park plays host to Rip Van Finnegan for this weekend's Music in the Park installment. Bagpiper Joe McDonald is joined by his musician friends, including a fiddle and harmonica player and a guitarist, for this fun-filled performance from 2 to 4 p.m. All you need to do is show up with friends, family, a blanket to gather on and an appetite for good times.

ELEMENTARY

Port Moody's Rocky Point Park will be grooving when Oliver Conway and his all-star band, the Elements, play their signature blend of searing vocals, harmonica and guitar, whether it's R&B, soul or blues tunes. Visit www.summersundays.ca.
