Friday, Sept. 5

ARTS CONNECTOR

The Port Moody Arts Centre (2425 St. Johns St.) hosts a new photo exhibit to coincide with the grand opening of the atrium linking PMAC with the Appleyard/Centennial house. The display features some 150 images snapped by PMAC employees using a range of different photo tools; the Appleyard family also loaned 10 old photos of the home for the show. WEEDS BE GONE

Join the Hyde Creek Watershed Society on the Hyde Creek Trail to help identify and remove invasive plants and keep this treasured trail beautiful. Volunteers should wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt and, if you have them, bring pruners or small clippers. Meet at the Hyde Creek Education Centre (3636 Coast Meridian Rd., PoCo) at 10 a.m. Visit www.hydecreek.org for more info.

HOCKEY SALE

Kids who still need hockey gear can check out the KidSport "hockey only" sale at the X-Treme Threads Warehouse (1371A Kebet Way, PoCo, off the Mary Hill Bypass). The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes hockey gear in a range of sizes. The KidSport organization raises money to help kids from low-income families pay for sports fees.

GARDEN ART SHOW

View artworks by Eric and Ezra Larsen at an open garden event (1047 Yarmouth St., PoCo) today and tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hosted by PoCo Garden Club past president Eurilda Larsen, the rain-or-shine show features works by her son and grandson, a recent grad of the Vancouver School for Media Arts. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

HARVEST FEST

The Hope Lutheran School and Church host a Harvest Fest and thrift sale at McLean Park (3155 Wellington St., PoCo) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids can pop in the bouncy castle, take a pony ride, check out the Tumblebus and have their face painted all while enjoying ice cream, a pie-baking competition and live music.

MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL

Head to Henderson Place Mall (1163 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) for the Mid-Autumn Festival, where there will be interesting exhibits, live shows, a kids' corner and lucky draw. The festival runs from noon to 4 p.m.

LEGION FAMILY DAY

The PoCo Legion Branch #133 (2675 Shaughnessy St.) hosts a Family Day & Country Ho Down Dance to celebrate the branch's change in its licence, which now allows for minors to attend Legion events. Bring the whole family to enjoy a beverage garden and barbecue from 12:30 to 6 p.m., with children's entertainment from 1 to 5 p.m. There will be face painters, music, a puppy parade, a bean bag toss and emergency vehicles to explore. Put on your cowboy hat for the country dance, from 7:30 p.m. to closing (minors allowed until 9 p.m.), with music by Tony Prophet and food and drink specials. BROADWAY HITS

Songs from The King and I, Oklahoma and Phantom of the Opera can be heard at the Terry Fox Theatre (1260 Riverwood Gate, PoCo) when SPECC-tacular Productions presents its show Nights On Broadway at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at the door or by calling 604-467-4225.

SALSA NIGHT

Keep the summer heat turned up by heading to the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) for Salsa & Latin Dance nights. Join the free dance lesson at 7:30 p.m., then practise your new salsa, merengue, cha cha and bachata moves from 8:30 p.m. to midnight. Tickets are $10 for the licensed event. ARTFEAT

Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam) staff and faculty showcase their artistic talents in a show called ArtFeat, which opened on Thursday. Faculty members including Oliver McTavish-Wisden, David Robinson (ceramics), printmaker Saskia Jetten, multimedia sculptor Joy Kirkwood and painters Jane Appleby, Adrian Walker and Sue Cowan are displaying their works, as are staff members Michael Fera, Bali Singh and Jessie Au.
