Sure, much of this long-awaited long weekend is about kicking back with family and friends to eat way too much turkey and stuffing and, of course, to remember to be grateful for all that we have. Here are some other ways to enjoy the time off.
Friday, Oct. 10
MOVIE NIGHT
Kick off the long weekend with the Port Moody Film Society, which is screening In the House at 7:30 p.m. at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.). The film follows a 16-year-old boy who draws on the life of a fellow student to write moving essays for his French teacher. Inspired, the teacher rediscovers a passion for his work, but the boy's work unleashes "a series of uncontrollable events." Tickets for In the House (France/comedy/drama, rated R) are $5 (with $5 membership). Visit www.pmfilm.ca.
Saturday, Oct. 11
KICK IT
Take a break from all that turkey talk by heading to Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) to cheer on teams in Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club's Thanksgiving tournament. Boys' and girls' games (U10-U12) run Saturday through Monday; check www.cmfsc.ca for details.
FAMILY DAY
It's family drop-in day at the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam), featuring the Sounds of Ice & Snow. Fire up your imaginations to make new musical instruments inspired by Paul Walde's orchestral performance in Requiem for a Glacier. The sounds will be recorded and sampled to make a downloadable song. Drop in from 1 to 4 p.m. (by donation, no registration required). Visit evergreenculturalcentre.ca.
MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... well, not too far away. Mini Jedis can enjoy an afternoon of Star Wars crafts, games and giveaways at the PoMo Public Library (100 Newport Dr.) starting at 1 p.m. (drop-in, kids under 10 require parent attendance). There will be activities for all ages, including a Jedi training obstacle course, a drawing contest and a chance to meet a real Jedi knight at 3 p.m. Kids (and parents!) in costume can enter the selfie contest for a chance to win an intergalactic goodie bag. For more information visit library.portmoody.ca or call 604-469-4577.
HOCKEY NIGHT
The Port Moody Panthers take on the Abbotsford Heat in a game at the Port Moody Arena (300 Ioco Rd.) in Junior B hockey action. Be there for the puck drop at 7:45 p.m. Visit www.portmoodypanthers.com for info.
Sunday, Oct. 12
HARVEST FEST BBQ
This weekend's Coquitlam Farmer's Market (624 Poirier St., Coquitlam) will feature more than the usual round-up of deliciousness with the annual Fall Harvest Festival and barbecue. The market kicks off at 9 a.m. with the barbecues fired up at 10 a.m. Drop by for an all-natural beef sausage from the Cariboo's Redl's Homegrown Beef, and fresh-baked rolls will be served up by Gesundheit Bakery. Don't forget to load up on condiments from JJ's Country Cooking, Aji Gourmet Foods and others, along with delicious seasonal vegetables from Wilbur & Sabastian's Smokehouse and Bistro. Kids can try their hand at "milking" a life-size ceramic cow, bob for apples and decorate Thanksgiving decorations.
BHANGRA MAGIC
Soak up the sights and sounds of Bollywood at the Bhangra Idols competition at the Hard Rock Casino Show Theatre (2080 United Blvd., Coquitlam). The Indian dance competition runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m.; call 604-523-5361 for more information.
