BEAD SHOW
Watch glass-blowing demonstrations and take a bauble class at this weekend's Fraser Valley Bead Show in Coquitlam. More than 50 vendors will be showing their wares on Friday (2 to 8 p.m.), Saturday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the Executive Plaza Hotel (405 North Rd.). EARTH HOUR
This is the local cities' seventh year participating in Earth Hour, a global climate-change initiative that draws attention to what individuals and communities can do to prevent climate change. Last year, the city of Port Coquitlam alone saved enough energy to power 40 households for a year - about 444,092 kilowatt hours - at its recreation centres and other facilities through energy efficiency upgrades along with staff-led behavioural change. For tips and info on what you can do to save energy, visit portcoquitlam.ca/energy. Earth hour runs from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. and people are asked to turn off lights and all electronic devices.
GREEN THUMBS
Hear from master gardeners and visit vendors' tables for the Port Coquitlam spring garden show, happening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Leigh Square Community Arts Village. The event is sponsored by the PoCo Garden Club, PoCo Heritage, Fraser Valley Regional Library and The Plant Place. Tickets are $60 for two in The Outlet (2100-2253 Leigh Sq.) or online at pocoheritage.org.
SHRED IT
Coquitlam Mounties want you to shred your personal records that are not needed during Fraud Prevention Month. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the detachment (2986 Guildford Way, next to Coquitlam city hall) will host a shredding event in the parking lot to the west of the building, off Burlington Drive. Cardboard and plastic won't be accepted by the Shred-It mobile service. The cost is a non-perishable donation to the food bank. Info: email [email protected].
POLISH FEST
Polonez Tri-City Polish Association marks its 25th year by showcasing the artistic talent of its members at Port Moody city hall (100 Newport Dr.). The display is up until March 29 and includes work from artists of Polish heritage, including Hanna Barbara Berwid, Maria Marcinek, Tomasz Cetnarowski and Elizabeth Dykosky.
BE 'BRAVE'
Check out Brave!, which runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Terry Fox Theatre in Port Coquitlam. Brave! is a story of compassion and justice: In 1975, psychiatric nurse and prison reformer Mary Steinhauser died at the BC Penitentiary in a hail of guards' bullets in a hostage incident gone terribly wrong. Her life is celebrated in an evening of dance, drama and music honouring her passionate drive to improve prisoner rehabilitation. A former inmate who knew Mary, now an actor and playwright, is featured in the cast. Special appearance by the Dancers of Damelahamid, one of Canada's finest Aboriginal dance companies. Event supports an SFU Aboriginal bursary to be presented that night. Tickets: www.marysteinhauser.com. Admission is $35 per person.
GMO OMG
In the award-winning documentary GMO OMG, director and concerned father Jeremy Seifert explores how genetically modified foods affect children, the health of the planet and our freedom of choice. These and other questions take Seifert on a journey from his family's table to Haiti, Paris, Norway and the lobby of agra-giant Monsanto. After the movie, GMO researcher Thierry Vrain will be guest speaker via Skype to answer audience questions. GMO OMG will be shown starting at 7 p.m. at Cornerstone Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1415 Noons Creek Dr., Coquitlam and is sponsored by Coquitlam Family Chiropractic Clinic (www.coquitlamfamilychiropractic.com). Those who plan to attend are asked to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early as seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

SOUP SISTERS
Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers are a social enterprise that makes and donates at least 45 litres of fresh, nourishing soup each month to Joy's Place, a Tri-City transition house that helps women and children who flee domestic abuse. Ongoing monthly events are $55 per person and include instruction from a chef plus wine, appetizers, a light dinner of soup, salad and bread, and an evening of making soup that you will then package up for Joy's Place. The group is taking reservations. Bring your friends, family, or have a team-building corporate event all for a good cause.
