BABY'S FIRST YEAR

Connect with fellow new parents to share information and support at Baby's First Year, a drop-in program running Fridays at Place Maillardville (1200 Cartier Ave., Coquitlam) through to Nov. 16 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The Oct. 19 speaker is Amy Lee of The Connection We Share, who will offer tips on how to take great cell phone photos. SPOOKTACULAR

The cobwebs are set and all sorts of spooky, creepy characters are ready to go Boo! at Vickie Ayers' haunted house. The annual show at 443 Draycott St. in Coquitlam raises money for Variety, The Children's Charity. It's wheelchair accessible and fun for all ages.

CURLING 101

New immigrants who are looking to learn more about Canadian culture can get a glimpse at one of our favourite pastimes at the SUCCESS Curling 101 workshop at 6:45 p.m. at the Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St., Coquitlam). Register at 604-468-6000 or [email protected].

ART SHOW

Discover stunning artworks at the Saint Catherine's Anglican Church Art Show, presented in conjunction with Art Focus Artists' Association. The show kicks off at the church (2211 Prairie Ave., PoCo) with a wine & cheese preview tonight, from 7 to 9 p.m. (admission is $15) and continues Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (free admission).

WOODWORKING WEEKEND

What do you get when you mix fresh cut cedar, power tools and smokies? The KMS Tools sixth annual WoodShow, running today and tomorrow at the KMS shop at 110 Woolridge St., Coquitlam. Inside the tent there will be tool manufacturers, live demos and deals. Enter to win a dream workshop and be sure to bring tools to donate for Tools for the World, which sends tools to developing countries.

GREAT GARAGE SALE

It's not just any garage sale, it's the Archbishop Carney regional secondary school indoor garage sale fundraiser, featuring a silent auction, food concessions and a bake sale. Admission is $3 (cash only). The sale runs Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at 1335 Dominion Ave., Port Coquitlam.

QUILTERS' CONNECTION

The Blue Mountain Quilters' Guild presents Decade of Quilts: A Quilt Show at Montgomery middle school (1900 Edgewood Ave., Coquitlam). There will be more than 130 beautifully stitched quilts on display, as well as a tea room and members' boutique, raffle quilt and door prizes. Visitors can also see the guild's own community quilt, presented to the Port Coquitlam Heritage and Cultural Society. HOT SALSA

Get ready to shake it at the Hot Salsa Dance Zone Latin dance night at the Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) from 7 p.m. to midnight. GIRLFRIENDS' NIGHT OUT

Get together with the girls for fashion, shopping wine and tasty treats - and support the Gaby Davis Foundation - at the Girlfriends' Night Out event at the River Springs Rec Centre (1950 Lodge Ave., Coquitlam). Presented with My Girlfriend's Closet, all proceeds from ticket sales and 20% of clothing sales will help families affected by childhood cancer. WELCOME HOME SALMON

It's that time of year again, when local salmon return to Tri-City waterways to spawn. Celebrate the 20th annual homecoming at the Hoy/Scott Watershed Society's Salmon Come Home event at the Hoy Creek Hatchery (behind Princess Crescent, near the City Centre Aquatic Complex). Learn about local salmon with Fisheries and Oceans Canada demonstrations, a children's fishing hole. Pinetree's Me to We Club will be doing face painting and offering battery recycling. There will also be plenty of "fishy" crafts and activities to keep the kids entertained. Live entertainment comes from the Ta Daa Lady, as well as an animal costume parade and storytelling within a giant inflatable salmon. Salmon Come Home runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.
