MOVIE NIGHT
A movie about a South American immigrant living in Spain and caring for a terminally sick man is the Port Moody Film Society's featured flick for the month. The drama/comedy Amador will be screened at the Inlet Theatre in PoMo city hall (100 Newport Dr.) at 7:30 p.m. Tickets at $5 plus an annual $5 society membership fee are available at the door, which opens at 7:15 p.m. Visit www.pmfilm.ca.
SING, DANCE
Unplugged at the Crossroads Coffeehouse launches the new year with a performance by Darren Exley, a singer/songwriter, bandleader and producer whose sound combines many musical genres from the past and the present. POLISH THEATRE
The Polish Theatre Canadian-Polish Arts Society presents Chlopcy (The Boys) at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way) at 7:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday. Penned by Stanislaw Grochowiak and directed by Marek Czuma, the show centres around a struggle between residents and nuns at a seniors' home. HIT THE TRAILS
Start the new year off on the right foot by joining a walk/run training clinic, offered by the city of Port Coquitlam. Saturday sessions from Jan. 12 to April 6 are at 9:30 a.m. at The Outlet (behind PoCo city hall) and Sunday clinics from Jan. 13 to April 7 are at 9 a.m. at the Hyde Creek recreation centre (1379 Laurier Ave.). PLAY TIME
Kids aged five to 15 are invited to audition for a school touring production put on by Theatrix. The Coquitlam group will host an open casting call for Flat Stanley Jr. - a beloved children's book that has become part of the elementary school curriculum - at 10 a.m. at Dogwood Pavilion (624 Poirier St., Coquitlam). Those accepted into the show will be required to attend rehearsals on Mondays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon at Dogwood. Can't wait until the NHL season finally resumes? Catch the Coquitlam Express junior A hockey club battle the Prince George team at 7 p.m. at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.). ART LIVE
Take the family out to Coquitlam's Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave.) and visit with working artists, who have exhibits up for the month at the Maillardville facility. See tapestry weaving by Virginia Baldwin, founder of the Tapestry Weavers' Interest Group (TWIGs), and painting displays by Ellen Bang and members of the Passionate Outdoor Painters. As well, bring a special thread to stitch into an anniversary tapestry celebrating 40 years of Place des Arts.
