It's the most wonderful time of the year... with kids heading back to school next week. But while making last-minute preparations for their academic year, be sure to take time out to catch some summer activities happening in the Tri-Cities this Labour Day weekend.

KICKIN'

Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club hosts its 26th annual Labour Day tournament today until Monday at various fields in the Tri-Cities. More than 100 teams are expected to compete in boys' and girls' gold divisions ranging in age from Under-13 to Under-18. Visit www.cmfsc.ca.

ORIGINAL ART

Port Moody artist David Bizzo is selling about 100 original paintings, prints and giclées - about half of which were done by his own hand - today until Tuesday from noon to 5 p.m. at his studio, located at 2120 Vintner St. The old Andres Winery is being converted into a staging area for the upcoming Evergreen Line construction. GALLERY TIME

Browse through the Port Moody Arts Centre (2425 St. Johns St.) to check out art pieces by Robi Smith in her new collection for the A View from the Water's Edge series, in the facility's Cabinet of Curiosity. Also showing are works from Rosie James (Crowd Cloud: Drawings in Space); Shari Pratt (portraits collected via Facebook); and Amang Mardokhy (Returning to Nature). Visit www.pomoarts.ca.

NATURE ARTISTS

Check out Port Coquitlam's Leigh Square Community Arts Village (2253 Leigh Sq., behind city hall), which has an exhibit titled Coming Up For Air, Rocks, Trees and H20. The mixed media show is by Pender Harbour artists Pat Jobb, June Malaka, Fran Sevier and Wendy Simmonds. Visit portcoquitlam.ca.

PATIENT CARE

The Eagle Ridge Hospital auxiliary host their Saturday café from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the main lobby of the Port Moody centre (475 Guildford Way), selling baked goods and beverages to raise money for hospital equipment and patient comfort items. Call 604-544-1470.

EXCHANGES

Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) hosts an opening reception for Elizabeth Russell's Exchanges exhibit from 4 to 6 p.m., with an artist talk from 3 to 4 p.m. The display has about 80 pastel pieces from seniors at Coquitlam's Glen Pine Pavilion as well as Port Moody secondary students and new Canadians in the Tri-Cities, who describe in words and drawings their memories of "home" or "homeland."
