THINGS TO DO: Make it a market day

Spring has felt positively summery this week, so let's hope the weather trends continue through the weekend, especially since there are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors.

TODAY: Friday, May 18

BISHOP'S MOVE

Head to Port Moody city hall (100 Newport Dr.) this morning to take part in the Rick Hansen 25th anniversary relay celebrations. PoMo will be joining more than 600 route communities across Canada that are re-creating Hansen's original Man in Motion tour; together with PoCoMo Youth Services, the city is inviting residents and friends to cheer on Moody middle school student Brynn Bishop, PoMo's local medal bearer. Events start at 8:45 a.m. with entertainment by Tony Prophet and free hot chocolate for all. The relay arrives just before 9 a.m., with speeches and more entertainment to follow.

CLIMB HIGHER

Rick Hansen is 54 years old. From beginning to end, the Thermal Drive hill rises just over 532 feet. Starting at 10:15 this morning Hansen tackles the hill - for the fourth time (crazy, right?) - to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his Man in Motion tour. It's an historic event, so be sure to scope out a spot on Thermal to see Hansen tackle this tremendous feat. A celebration at the top of the hill at Seymour Drive runs from about 11:05 to 11:30 a.m. Visit www.rickhansen.com for more information.

NOW OPEN

Summer is coming, so plan now by registering the kids in Place des Arts' Summer Fun art camps, running July 3 to Aug. 10. Visit www.placedesarts.ca or call 604-664-1636; registration can also be done in person at 1120 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam.

LACROSSE ACTION

Watch the PoCo Saints fend off the incoming Delta Islanders in a B.C. Junior A lacrosse league game at the PoCo recreation centre (2580 Shaughnessy St., PoCo), with face-off at 8 p.m.

Saturday, May 19

WALK WITH ME

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart continues his training regimen in the Healthy Community Challenge and is inviting the public to join him. He'll be exploring the eastern edge of the city this morning, with a walk starting at Victoria Drive and DeBoville Slough, starting at 8 a.m.

WEED OUT

Help keep DeBoville Slough knotweed-free by joining the weed removal party running from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. Volunteers (teens and up) are needed to work with city staff and the Friends of DeBoville Slough to rid the banks of the highly invasive Japanese knotweed. Just bring a water bottle; gloves and tools will be provided. Meet at the north bank on the corner of Victoria Drive and Cedar Avenue.

TREASURE HUNT

Here's a garage sale that aims to make a difference: Meridian Village (3120 Coast Meridian Rd., Port Coquitlam) will have a large selection of items for sale, including clothing, sports equipment, movies and more, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Funds raised benefit Meridian's tenant association to host community clean-ups and social events, children's programming and to build a new playground.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

Are you a fan of the Brits? Join like-minded folks for a lunch celebrating the Queen's diamond jubilee at the Royal Canadian Legion PoCo Branch 133 (2675 Shaughnessy St.). There will be traditional British fare, including beef steak pie and bread pudding, as well as roaring English humour and monarchy trivia. Tickets are $20/$25, available at 604-931-5120.

Sunday, May 20

MARKET DAY

The Coquitlam Farmers Market is back, and that means making a tradition of perusing all the fresh produce, baked goods, crafts and more each Sunday morning. The market is located in the parking lot of the Dogwood Pavilion (624 Poirier St., Coquitlam) and runs Sundays until Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visit www.makebakegrow.com for more info.

SPORTS DAY

Take the family out to the ball game, where the Coquitlam Reds will be battling the Okanagan Athletics in a B.C. Premier Baseball League doubleheader at Mundy Park (Hillcrest Street at Foster Avenue), with games at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Starting at 5 p.m., the PoCo Saints clash with the Nanaimo Jr. Timbermen in a B.C. Junior A lacrosse league game (hopefully without a bench-clearing fight) at the Port Coquitlam recreation centre (2580 Shaughnessy St., PoCo).
