It's a weekend full of May Day festivities and outdoor activities, so keep your fingers crossed the beautiful sunny weather continues.
TODAY: Friday, May 10
HISTORICAL WALL HANGING
Stitchers have been hard at work for more than two years now on "Stitching Our History," a 14-foot embroidered wall hanging depicting Port Moody's history in honour of its centennial. Drop by the PoMo Arts Centre (2425 St. Johns St.) to see the work laid out as stitchers put on the finishing touches, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
MOVIE NIGHT
The Port Moody Film Society screens King of Devil's Island, an award-winning drama (subtitled) starring Stellan Skarsgård (star of David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) at 7:30 p.m. at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.). Based on a true story, the film follows a group of young delinquent boys in Norway in the early 20th century who live under brutal conditions. UNDER THE SEA
Dive into the world of mermaids in the Lindbjerg Academy's presentation of The Little Mermaid Jr., featuring young actors clad in elaborate costumes, at the Terry Fox Theatre. A group of younger students will also be performing Cinderella Kids. Shows are today and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17 at the door.

Check out Gleneagle Secondary's stunning production of Thoroughly Modern Millie (1195 Lansdowne Dr., Coquitlam) at 7 p.m. (tickets are $12/$8).

Both Coquitlam and Port Moody are hosting their city-wide garage sale events today, so there will be plenty of treasure hunting opportunities throughout both cities. The New View Society (2050 Mary Hill Rd., PoCo) hosts a free community breakfast, complete with eggs, sausages, croissants, fruit and more, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Stay to enjoy the parade festivities as well.
MAY DAY
Celebrate the 90th annual May Day Festival with a full day packed with family fun, starting with the Elks Pancake Breakfast (7 to 11 a.m.) at the Elks Hall (2272 Leigh Sq., $5/$3). Work off all that grub at the May Day Mile Run (9:45 a.m. from Wilson Avenue and Shaughnessy Street), and nab your prime spot for the Rotary May Day Grande Parade at 10:35 a.m. along Shaughnessy, Elgin, Mary Hill Road and ending at Tyner Street. There are also community block parties, historical trolley tours and a book sale, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Terry Fox Library (2470 Mary Hill Rd.). Visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/100.
POCO PLANTS
The May Day festivities continue after the parade with a Back in Time promenade, with the public encouraged to join PoCo council members and performers in period costume as they walk from city hall to Aggie Park. The 15-minute walk, starting at about 12:15 p.m., ends with a tree planting and plaque dedication near where a similar event took place 100 years ago. The ceremony is followed by live music, a royal tea, a trolley tour of historic sites and an afternoon tea. Visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/100 for full details.
BIRD WALK
Did you know that loads of migratory birds are now flocking to Colony Farm Regional Park? Join the Colony Farm Park Association and Burke Mountain Naturalists on a guided tour (2:30 p.m.), and listen for males singing for their mates and the bustle of preparing for nesting season. A heritage building tour starts at 1 p.m. For the kids there will be wildlife puzzles and a chance to plant a pot of flowers for Mother's Day. The free event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. at the end of Colony Farm Road.
Sunday, May 12
MOM'S DAY PICNIC
Celebrate Mom at the Mother's Day Picnic at Aggie Park (3050 Chester St., PoCo), a fun-filled community event running from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be free activities for the whole family, as well as prizes. And, of course, the Kinsmen Club's pancake breakfast (8:30 to 10:30 a.m.) is not to be missed (lunch runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., cost is $3/$5).
TREE TOUR
After Mom gets breakfast in bed, gather up the family for a special Mother's Day guided tree tour on the Riverview Hospital grounds, hosted by the Riverview Horticultural Centre Society. The walk leaves at 1 p.m. from the Henry Esson Young Building. Visit www.rhcs.org for a site map.
