HURRY HARD

The Port Moody Curling Club hosts its first Curl BC event this weekend as the BC Lower Mainland Senior Women's Regional Playdown kicks off today. Curlers will be competing for three spots in the 2015 Tim Hortons BC Senior Curling Championship. The playdown starts today with teams on the ice at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and continues Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission to the event at the PoMo recreation complex (300 Ioco Rd.) is free.

HOCKEY NIGHT

The Coquitlam Express face off against the Penticton Vees peach team (the Vees are named for the three types of peaches grown in the area - Vedette, Veteran and Valiant) in tonight's BCHL regular season game. It's sure to be a slugfest as the Express, currently ranked 13th, take on the top-ranked Vees. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.).

MOVIE NIGHT

The Port Moody Film Society features In a Better World (Danish, English subtitles/drama/rated R) at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.) at 7:30 p.m. The story weaves between a Sudanese refugee camp and a Danish town as the lives of two families intersect with potentially dangerous consequences. The critically acclaimed film garnered 11 awards, including the 2011 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Visit www.pmfilm.ca for more information.

BEYOND REAL

If you haven't dropped by Port Coquitlam's Leigh Square Community Arts Village (2253 Leigh Square), catch up with artist Jeannette Sirois' highly detailed facial portraits in Beyond Real: Overexposed Underexposed. The exhibit features portraits done in meticulously detailed coloured pencil, each of which was crafted after studying more than 100 photos of the subject. Spot the incredibly fine details, the emotion and the meaning behind each face in the exhibit, which wraps up on Sunday.

GO PANTHERS GO

Prepare to make some noise as the Port Moody Panthers take on the Abbotsford Pilots at the Port Moody Arena (300 Ioco Rd.) in a regular season game tonight at 7:45 p.m. It will be the Panthers' first game since trading their top scorer, forward Adam Rota, to the Grandview Steelers. Visit www.portmoodypanthers.com for info.

CLEAN-UP TIME

Head on down to the river to clear up all manner of trash - and keep things clean for the Coquitlam River's five salmon species. Riverside Fly & Tackle hosts the 12th annual Coquitlam River Clean-Up, and everyone is welcome. Meet at the shop (2847 Shaughnessy St., PoCo, in the Lions Park parking lot) at 9 a.m. Volunteers will be in teams of up to eight and will cover the area from the red bridge to the river's upper reaches. Equipment will be provided but participants are asked to bring a pair of gloves and to dress appropriately. Visit www.coquitlamriverwatershed.ca for more information.
