The PoMo ArtsFest officially kicks off with a gala reception at 7 p.m., featuring the sounds of smooth jazz pianist/percussionist Kristian Alexandrov and his singing partner Shannon Gaye - both residents of Port Moody - and special guest Jens Lindemann, an internationally acclaimed trumpet player who heads up brass studies at UCLA. Artist Joyelle Brandt will lead a Quote Art workshop from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Port Moody Arts Centre (2425 St. John's St.) to talk about how one word has shaped her year, for the past four years. HOW NICE
A new show featuring the work of 15 female artists opens at Port Coquitlam's Leigh Square Community Arts Village (behind city hall) at 1 p.m. The exhibit, titled How Nice to Have a Hobby, takes aim at gender bias in the art world. Curated by Deanna Fogstrom and Danaca Ackerson, the display runs until March 31. Visitportcoquitlam.ca.
DEBUT RECITAL
Piano, vocal, violin, guitar and bass students with the Tri-City School of Music will host the centre's inaugural recital at Port Coquitlam's Leigh Square Community Arts Village (behind city hall) from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
CZECH MUZIK
Place des Arts' faculty members Roger Mangas (violin) and Monica Pfau (piano) will wrap up their series of rare Czech music pieces at a concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Maillardville facility (1120 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam). Tickets at $15/$13 are available by calling 604-664-1636.
