FRIDAY, MARCH 13

FILM FEST

Prepare to sit back and soak up some of the best the Canadian film scene has to offer with the 15th annual Port Moody Canadian Film Festival, running throughout the weekend at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.). Presented by the Port Moody Film Society, the festival kicked off last night and continues tonight with Little Terrors at 7 p.m., a haunting film about a young American boy recruited to bomb a U.S. embassy in Delhi. At 9:30 p.m. catch the documentary Just Eat It, a shocking look at a Vancouver couple's exploration into food waste as they survive for six months on exclusively discarded food. Saturday's lineup features In Her Place at 7 p.m., about a wealthy couple that secretly adopts the unborn child of a rural teenager, and Enemy at 9:30 p.m. The closing film Sunday night is the Cannes hit Tu Dors Nicole at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 per screening with $5 annual membership (cash or cheque only). GO FOR A SKATE

It's the last toonie skate of the season at the Port Coquitam recreation complex (2150 Wilson Ave.) so grab your skates (or rent them on site) and head to the rink from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. On Saturday,Westminster Savings offers a free skate at the Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.) from 2 to 3:15 p.m. Visit coquitlam.ca/pslc for more information.

SATURDAY, MARCH 14

SHRED IT

We're supposed to live in a paperless society but it seems we have more of it than ever. Sort through it, stack up all the unnecessary documents and haul it down to the Coquitlam RCMP detachment for a shredding event as part of their fraud prevention month. Enter the parking lot off Burlington Drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and bring a non-perishable food donation for the Share food bank.

DRAWING ROOM

The Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam) gives families a chance to give drawing a whirl from 1 to 4 p.m. No drawing experience is needed for the event and materials will be supplied; just show up ready to have fun. Admission is by donation.

WEARABLE ART

Be wowed by the display of colour, creativity and absolute coolness of the Wearable Art Awards collection, on display at the Port Moody Arts Centre (2425 St. Johns St.) until April 2. There are dyed silks, beadwork, headdresses and much more to see. And you can have your say, too, on your favourite piece by voting for the People's Choice prize.

PAINT PALETTE

It's been a hit the first two times so Palette... eat, paint, create! is back for a third go tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam). The event offers everyone a chance to unleash their inner creativity while sampling delicious charcuterie, olives, artisan breads and crackers, fine cheeses and petit fours (there's also a cash bar). FARMERS MARKET

Get a glimpse at early spring produce at the Port Moody Winter Farmers Market at the recreation complex (300 Ioco Rd.), and grab some freshly baked bread, scrumptious cheese and even some gourmet goods for tonight's dinner. TEA PARTY

Join the Queen of Hearts and the Cheshire Cat for the Mad as a Hatter Tea Party aboard the rail car at the Port Moody Station Museum (2734 Murray St.) at 11 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. This Alice in Wonderland-inspired event will be serving up delicious treats donated by Cobs Bread, drinks from Spirit Bear Coffee and, of course, plenty of tea, as well as live entertainment.
