JELLY BEAN JOY

Kids in Grades 4, 5 and 6 can join the Jelly Bean Dance at the Hyde Creek recreation centre (1379 Laurier Ave.) at 6:15 p.m., a supervised event offered by the city of Port Coquitlam. The Port Moody Ecological Society and Rocky Point Kayak team up at 9 a.m. at Rocky Point Park (2800-block of Murray Street) for the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Bring garbage bags, gloves and boots - and a kayak or canoe (which are also for rent). Register at rockypointkayak.com.

SOD TURNING

Canada's industry minister will break ground at 10:30 a.m. to mark the expansion of the Port Moody Arts Centre (2425 St. John's St.). Conservative MP James Moore (Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam) will be at the future site of the Centennial Appleyard House, which will link to the St. John's Street arts facility. BRUSH STROKES

The city of Port Coquitlam will host a number of events for Culture Days, a weekend-long national celebration of the arts and culture. From 1 to 4 p.m. at Leigh Square Community Arts Village (behind PoCo city hall), see performances by the Tri-City Chinese Community Society as well as bookmaking, printmaking, painting, martial arts and knitting demonstrations. In addition, a new exhibit featuring the Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada and 111 West Coast Literary Portraits will open. Artist Sarah Ronald will be at nearby Veterans Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. while artists Jessica Glesby and Ian Wojtowicz will be at the Lions Park skate park from 2 to 5 p.m. Don't forget to pop into Stiffs Studio (12 - 2250 Tyner St.) for a songwriting and recording lesson. A BIT OF HISTORY

HAPPY TRAILS

The rivers and trails of Port Coquitlam will be celebrated at an annual city festival, happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lions Park (2300 Lions Way) and continuing from noon to 4 p.m. at Peace Park (1470 Kebet Way). Activities at Lions Park include children's passport stations and prizes, Culture Days activities, displays, a salmon smolt release and music by the Working Stiffs. And at Peace Park, tickets for paddlewheeler river tours on the MV Native will go on sale at noon for $2 on a first-come, first-served basis. The paddlewheeler tours are at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Other activities at Peace Park include a boat-building workshop and crafts, displays and live music performances including Coldwater Road, who were part of the 2013 Peak Performance Project. Port Coquitlam's contribution to the Culture Days' celebration continues from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lions Park (2300 Lions Way) with Diane Moran and the Maple Creek Streamkeepers decorating paper fish for a community art mural. At Peace Park (1470 Kebet Way), from noon to 5 p.m. will be demos by Diamond Zhou Yezhuang and Ilsoo Kyung Maclaurin and artist Sarah Ronald returns to Veterans' Park. Join artist Joy Kirkwood for a visual language workshop at September Family Day at Place des Arts (1120 Brunette Ave., Coquitlam). Participants can view the photo exhibit by Alan Maples and make up stories and artwork based on the image, using cut-out words from old books. Maples will be on hand for a talk about his craft, and there will be plenty of activities happening during the afternoon at PdA and nearby in Heritage Square and Mackin House Museum. Step into a world of the arts for the weekend-long celebration of Culture Days, which starts at 1:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way) with a guitar performance. It will be followed at 3 p.m. by Oliver Hockenhull's digital installation based on a Franz Kafka parable. WHAT A RIDE!

Rebel Haunt Theatre will transport a crowd back to the early days of Port Moody for the centennial edition of the Ioco Days Festival. The Venosta Variety Hour radio show happens at Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr., in city hall) at 4 p.m. Admission is by donation.
