GIVE CANCER THE BOOT

Support childhood cancer research at the annual Kick for a Cure, organized in part by the Coquitlam-based Michael Cuccione Foundation. Sponsored by Black Press, the parent company of The Tri-City News, the fundraiser at Coquitlam Town Centre Park runs all day and includes a family-fun zone, dog demos, youth soccer clinics and opportunities to meet with Vancouver Whitecaps' players.Carl and Bob Lenarduzzi will also be in the celebrity booth from noon to 1 p.m., and Bob will participate in the opening ceremonies until 1:30 p.m. Visit kickforacure.ca.

STORYTIME

Kids itching to get out but it's too hot? Cool them off at the Terry Fox Library (2470 Mary Hill Rd., Port Coquitlam) at 11 a.m. for a storytime. The event is free and includes story telling, fingerplays and songs. Visit fvrl.ca.

BOATS, BOWLS, PAPER

Celebrate all things made from trees at a wood fair at the Port Moody Arts Centre (2425 St. John's St.) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free, family event - held to mark the city's 100th year - includes displays and demonstrations of artisan work such as wood carving, wood turning, furniture, boxes, toys, boats, bark carvings and paper making. QUILTING SHOW

Take a Walk in the Forest with Quilters Out of Bounds, which opens its exhibit at 2 p.m. at Port Coquitlam's Leigh Square Community Arts Village (behind city hall). The display, which runs until Aug. 19, reveals unconventional creations by this group of a dozen or so textile artists. Also at 2 p.m., Village Vibe happens at the Leigh Square bandshell with singer/songwriter Johnny Gallant covering old-time songs and Australian acoustic duo Nice Verdes following with a set.

LAX ACTION

For some sports, cheer on the Coquitlam Jr. A Adanacs as the lacrosse team battles the Victoria Shamrocks at 3 p.m. at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre (633 Poirier St., Coquitlam). LIKE MOM, LIKE DAUGHTER

Juno award-winning singer/songwriter Shari Ulrich, her daughter, Julia, and her friend, Ted Littlemore, perform at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way) tonight as part of the final Music on the Grill concert. SLIPPERY FISH

Drive the kids out to Belcarra regional park to discover what lies beneath the waves and dock. Metro Vancouver Regional Parks and Belcarra Beachkeepers present Creatures of the Not-So-Deep, a free family program with a biologist that examines crabs, sea stars and clams, running between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Registration is not required. To get there, follow Ioco Road to the Belcarra picnic area and look for the tents. Plan an hour or more to complete all activities and bring rubber boots or shoes that can get muddy. PARK TUNES

The R&B/funk/pop band Groove n Tonic take to the Rocky Point Park stage in Port Moody at 2 p.m. as part of Pacific Coast Terminals' Summer Sunday Concerts series. Or at 2 p.m. at Lions Park for Port Coquitlam's Music in the Park series, join Bend Sinister, a progressive indie rock band from Kelowna.

TWO DECADES

Hear Vancouver painter and sculptor Michael Abraham talk about his whimsical artwork at 3 p.m. at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre gallery (1205 Pinetree Way) during the opening reception for his 20-year retrospective show. Visit evergreenculturalcentre.ca.
