Let two wheels take you on a ride through history this weekend in Port Coquitlam.
For the third year in a row, volunteers from PoCo Heritage will be leading a fun and informative bike tour - the Tour de PoCo - through the trails and parks of the city and surrounding area.
According to ride organizer Steve Smith, this year's Tour de PoCo will be bigger and better, thanks to support from the Port Coquitlam Centennial Spirit Committee as well as continued support from key sponsors Caps Westwood Cycle and Norco Bicycles in the form of some giveaways.
"This year, we are making the ride a little longer with a few extra twists and turns," Smith said. "We will have fewer stops but the stops we do have will be focussed around three of the themes that were critical to Port Coquitlam's founding and growth: farming, working rivers and the CP Railway. I hope that in this centennial year we can truly celebrate what we love about living in this area by getting out and enjoying it together."
Despite the name, Tour de PoCo is not a race. The tour proceeds at a comfortable pace that most cyclists can keep up with.
It all starts Sunday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Lions Park. Organizers ask that you arrive a few minutes early to register. It's a free event (donations to PoCo Heritage will be accepted) and open to all who want to join but riders should have a trail-capable bike in good working order as well as required safety gear (approved helmet and bell). The ride is approximately 26 km in length and will take about three and a half hours. Maps and snacks will be provided.
