The Tri-City News is a finalist in a provincial journalism competition for its ongoing campaign to aid the rebuilding of Mossom Creek Hatchery.
The Tri-City News' hatchery project is one of three finalists for the Ma Murray Community Service Award in the BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Association's 2015 awards. The other two finalists are also Black Press papers: The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News, for its Maple Ridge Community Chest campaign; and The North Island Gazette, for its hamper fund.
Mossom Creek Hatchery, located on Port Moody's north shore, burned down in December 2013 and The Tri-City News' efforts to highlight and help the rebuilding process started early in 2014.
That work, spearheaded by publisher Nigel Lark and editor Richard Dal Monte, and led by reporter Diane Strandberg, has so far included dozens of feature articles and photographs as well as free advertising.
Hatchery volunteers have used the coverage of their work to aid in fundraising for the rebuilding project, which is nearing completion. For more information on the project, visit mossomcreek.org.
BCYCNA will hand out its annual awards at a banquet on April 25 at the River Rock Casino in Richmond.
