A Coquitlam student is closer to reaching her educational goals after being selected as one of 11 recipients of the $2,000 Envision Financial Education Award. Lauren Wilson is a current student at Queens University, enrolled in its accelerated route to medical school with a goal of specializing in public health. In addition to her schooling, Wilson has spent considerable time volunteering at the Child and Family Research Institute at BC Children's Hospital. She is also an active volunteer at TALK, Telephone Aid Line in Kingston (Ont.) and helps to answer their crisis line. Each year, secondary and post-secondary students throughout B.C. who are also Envision Financial members are encouraged to apply for one of 11 $2,000 scholarships. These education awards recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding scholastic ability combined with exceptional community volunteer service. In recognition of its innovative community program, The Full Cupboard, Envision Financial also introduced The Full Cupboard Volunteer Award in 2013, which recognizes two secondary or post-secondary students who volunteer with their local food banks with a $2,500 education award.

BLOCK PARTY

The Sefton Street community offered a big Thank You to Port Coquitlam Firefighters for making its annual August block party memorable. According to a community organizer, party-goers were fortunate the local smoke-eaters weren't too busy, making a great block party even better. As well, residents donated 102 lb. of food and an envelope of cash to Share Family and Community Services' food bank.
