Tri-City teens and young adults have until Oct. 29 to apply to be part of the new session of the B.C. Youth Parliament.

A total of 95 young legislators-in-the-making are needed for the next sitting, which includes a visit to the Leg in Victoria at Christmas time.

Participants aged between 16 and 21 can sharpen their public speaking and debating skills, learn about the democratic process and make a difference in the community like helping out at soup kitchens or volunteering at local parks for summer drop-in programs.

BCYP registrar Dora Turje, a Coquitlam district on-call teacher, said the non-partisan group is unique as it combines both parliamentary studies and community service. "It's difficult to find that in a single organization," she said.

BCYP is made up of a mock "cabinet" that includes a premier and house speaker. Most of those on the 2014-'15 cabinet are returning BCYP members, Turje said.
