While I sympathize with the woman detailed in your article about drivers ignoring the “walk” signal, and am glad her son is OK, I would like to tell the other side of the story.

I cannot count the number of times I have been trying to make a turn when pedestrians, ignoring the signal telling them not to enter the crosswalk, run out into the road and shake their fist or yell at me because I am turning.

One memorable incident had a young man try to put his foot through the driver’s door of my car. I have had to slam on my brakes when my bumper in the crosswalk in order to avoid hitting someone who has run – yes, I said run - out into the road despite the clear “don’t walk” signal or even the countdown which says there are only two seconds before the light changes.

So please, we share not only the road, but the crosswalks, too. The “don’t walk” signal is to give drivers a chance to turn a corner before through cross traffic gets a green light. Share and share alike.
