Books Plus: Anxiety, bike maintenance, storytimes & games

Libraries in Coquitlam, PoCo and Port Moody offer a variety of programs in addition to lending books.

Books Plus runs in The Tri-City News each Friday to highlight programs and happenings in the Tri-Cities’ three libraries: Coquitlam Public Library, Port Moody Public Library and Terry Fox Library in Port Coquitlam.

COQUITLAM

• Anxiety in Children and Youth: Mental Health Week is May 2 to 8 and on Wednesday, May 4 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the City Centre branch will host a workshop with Liliana Cortes, a registered clinical counsellor at Leap Clinic, who has been working with anxious children and their families since 2004. She will be at the library to share her extensive and specialized experience in evidence-based treatments for anxiety and depression in children and adolescents. It can be confusing and even frightening when your child’s anxiety is causing them difficulty at school, at home or with friends. Finding effective support can be an overwhelming task when there are so many options. Workshop participants will take away the tools and knowledge needed to help their children manage anxiety, gain confidence and self-esteem, and learn how to thrive. To register for this free program, leave a message on the library’s registration line, 604-937-4155.

• Bike Maintenance Workshop: Learn basic bicycle maintenance tips and tricks from HUB, a non-profit organization whose mission is to get more people cycling. This two-hour session for teens and adults, sponsored by the city of Coquitlam, will cover the fundamentals of how your bike works and how you can easily have it running smoothly this summer. Bikes will not be allowed in the workshop, but participants can bring their bikes to the library and lock them in the rack by the entrance. The workshop runs from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 in the Nancy Bennett Room at the Poirier branch. Registration is limited to 20; to register, leave a message on the library’s registration line, 604-937-4155.

For more information about any of these programs, visit www.coqlibrary.ca. The City Centre branch is located at 1169 Pinetree Way and the Poirier branch at 575 Poirier St.
