Books Plus runs in The Tri-City News each Friday to highlight programs and happenings in the Tri-Cities' three libraries: Coquitlam Public Library, Port Moody Public Library and Terry Fox Library in Port Coquitlam.
COQUITLAM
Play and Learn: Join librarians at Coquitlam Centre mall for Play and Learn storytimes, songs and crafts on the last Wednesday of each month, on the lower level in front of the Bay. The theme for May 30 is Bugs and Butterflies and the session runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. No registration is required for this free program, just drop-in.
Book clubs: Do you enjoy reading and talking about books? Coquitlam Public Library hosts two Monday book clubs where members meet once a month to discuss a book chosen at the previous meeting - and new members are always welcome. The evening book club meets from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the board room at the Poirier Branch. The afternoon book club meets from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the program room at the City Centre branch.
To register for the evening club, call Jason at 604-937-4148, Ext. 238; for the afternoon club, call Janice at 604-937-4140 (or just drop-in). CPL also has several book club titles that are available for loan to community book clubs. To reserve a title, call or email Kathy or Lynn at 604-937-4140.
On June 4, the Evening Book Club will discuss Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. In this unsentimental rendering of Nigerian tribal life before and after the coming of colonialism, Okonkwo, the son of a charming ne'er-do-well has worked all his life to overcome his father's weakness and has achieved great success. But the arrival of missionaries and colonial representatives completely disrupts Ibo culture, and in the chasm between old ways and new, Okonkwo is lost forever.
