COQUITLAM

Adult Literacy Tutor/Learning Buddy: Are you interested in helping adults upgrade their English skills? If you have two or three hours to volunteer with a learner each week, then Coquitlam Public Library welcomes your application to its Adult Literacy Tutor/Learning Buddy program; applications are available on the library's website. Tutor training will include working with low-literacy, beginner and intermediate English language learners. Tutors placed with low-literacy learners will work with students twice a week; tutors working with beginner and intermediate students meet once a week. Applicants selected for the tutoring program will attend two three-hour training sessions on Sept. 23 and 30, facilitated by instructors from Frontier College. Tutoring will begin in October. To apply to the program, drop off a completed application form and two completed reference forms to Janice Williams at Coquitlam Public Library, 575 Poirier St., or submit by email to [email protected] by Sept. 12. The program is a partnership between the library, Frontier College, Coquitlam Continuing Education and New Beginnings, and is supported by proceeds from The Friends of Coquitlam Public Library and the Tri-Cities Literacy Committee.

For more information about any of these programs, visit www.library.coquitlam.bc.ca. The City Centre branch is located at 1169 Pinetree Way and the Poirier branch at 575 Poirier St.

TERRY FOX

World and Documentary Film Night: You can be entertained by world cinema each Monday at Terry Fox Library. Fox will be screening a selection of Oscar nominees and winners from around the world. The first film, The End of Time, is a documentary from the National Film Board of Canada; filmmaker Peter Mettler travels the globe to explore a diverse range of perspectives on time: from scientists working with a particle accelerator who try to examine time by smashing protons together in a 27-km long concrete structure miles beneath the surface; to Buddhists visiting the tree where Buddha was enlightened and more. This thought-provoking film will be screened on Sept. 9 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
