BOOKS PLUS: Movies, genealogy and English practice at Tri-City libraries

COQUITLAM

City Centre branch closure: The current City Centre library branch at Coquitlam city hall will be closed starting Oct. 22 to facilitate a move to the new branch at 1169 Pinetree Way (at Henderson Place) which will open in the middle of November. While City Centre is closed: book drops at the old location will remain open during the day for patrons to drop off returned items. Materials can also be returned to the Poirier branch (575 Poirier St.); and if patrons have requested items, they will be available for pick up at the Poirier branch. Thursday Evening at the Movies: Fascinating documentaries from the National Film Board of Canada are showing in Poirier branch's Nancy Bennett Room. On Oct. 11, Surviving Progress (87 minutes) will be shown starting at 6:45 p.m. Inspired by Ronald Wright's bestselling book, A Short History of Progress, this film challenges the viewer to overcome progress traps that destroyed past civilizations and threaten our own. Teen programs: Kids 11 and older can drop in to play video games after school at the Poirier branch from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. The next games days are on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11 in the Nancy Bennett Room. Bring your own games for Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii.

PORT MOODY

ESL: Are you learning English or do you know someone who needs English language practice? The library is a great place to get materials aimed specifically at ESL patrons and offers programs for English learners.

Adult Learners Book Club: The Adult Learners Book Club meets once a month to talk about a book written in simple language. On Oct. 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the book Shipwreck by Maureen Jennings will be discussed. You can join in for this opportunity to read more, practise English conversation and make new friends. All adult learners, including ESL, are welcome.

Share English practice groups for adults: Head for the library's ParkLane Room on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and join other English learners in this free program put on by Share Family and Community Services. You will get to practise English, make new friends and find out about your community.
