BOOKS PLUS: Parlez Français, explore dementia, get online at Tri-City libraries

COQUITLAM

Parlez-Nous Français: Improve your French in CPL's after-school French homework and conversation club. French immersion students in elementary or middle school are invited to practise with French-speaking volunteers from high school. Kids should bring homework assignments, or come prepared to work on their French conversation skills. Teen volunteers will earn community service hours. The next session ofParlez-Nous Français will run: Fridays, Sept. 14 to Oct. 26, 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. at the Poirier branch. Getting to Know Dementia: On Monday, Sept. 17 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Dorothy Leclair, support and education co-ordinator from the North Fraser Alzheimer Resource Centre, will give an introductory overview of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and discuss the challenges of receiving a diagnosis. Participants will learn about the different types of support available throughout the dementia journey, and how to begin planning for the future. People with a diagnosis of dementia, care partners and family members are all invited to attend. Registration is required for this free program, which will be held in the Nancy Bennett Room in the Poirier branch, as space is limited; phone 604-937-4155.

TERRY FOX

Adult Learner book club: You can make new friends, read interesting books and practise English in a fun environment with this Fox book club. Adults upgrading their reading skills or learning English are welcome to join. Books discussed will vary from ELSA Levels 2 to 5 according to the reading levels and interests of the group. Call or drop by the information desk to join. The group meets at Terry Fox Library on the second Friday of each month. The first meeting takes place Sept. 14 from 2 to 3 p.m.

PMPL hosts a number of hands-on computer classes in the ParkLane Room. Space is limited; call 604-469-4577 to register (except for the Get an Email Account class, which is drop in):

Basic Computer Skills (Windows 7) - Sept. 25 from 2:30 4 p.m. or 7 to 8:30 p.m., get comfortable with computers. Learn how to use a mouse, understand the desktop and create documents and folders.

Internet Basics - Oct. 2 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. or 7 to 8:30 p.m., learn toolbar tricks, internet jargon, and some great tips on creating effective internet searches.

Get an Email Account (no registration required) - Oct. 16 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. or 7 to 8 p.m., keep in touch with family and friends by signing up for a free web-based email account (Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail).

Email Tips - Oct. 23 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. or 7 to 8:30 p.m., get tips on how to manage your web-based email account (Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail), set up folders, send attachments, create a contacts list and more. You will need an email account prior to class. If you need help setting up your email account, drop by on Oct. 16.

And for something a little different: Clear Clutter: On Sept. 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., get a reality check on your household CRUD (completely ridiculous useless debris) and laugh your way to a clutter-free existence with authors Susan Borax and Heather Knittel.
