Teen Poetry Slam: On Wednesday, April 10, CPL is hosting its annual Teen Poetry Slam for competitors in Grades 8 through 12. A panel of judges will score the performers to determine first, second and third place, and winners will earn prizes totalling $150 in value. The slam runs from 7 to 8 p.m. in the adjoining program rooms (Room 137 and the Coquitlam Foundation Meeting Room) at the City Centre branch. As well, anyone who is not competing can read a poem during the open mic session from 6:45 to 7 p.m.; open mic poems can be original or written by someone else; no one may read an open mic poem and compete in the slam. Anyone may watch and listen but to compete in the slam, registration is required. Call Chris at 604-554-7339 or email [email protected].

Philosophers' Cafe: Do you believe in past lives? How can successive lives change your perception of life? That's the topic at the April 11 Philosophers' Café at the Poirier branch (7 to 8:45 p.m.). Philosophers' Café is an informal public discussion that is open to everyone.

Storytimes too Crowded? Try PMPL's Thursday morning Baby Sing and Learn drop-in from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. until May 30. Join librarians for this interactive program of songs, rhymes and books that is appropriate for parents/caregivers and their newborn to 18-month-old babies.

What's a Zinio?: Zinio is an online service providing cover-to-cover digital editions of hundreds of Canadian and American magazines. Your PMPL card gives you free access to magazines that can be read on your computer, smartphone or tablet, and can be downloaded for offline viewing. Try it out at library.portmoody.ca under Digital Content.

Adult Learners Book Club (drop-in): If you are learning English or upgrading your reading skills, you might want to drop in to this club, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m. to discuss a book written in simple language. On April 10, club members will be discussing Richard Wagamese's The Next Sure Thing, which is available at the library.

Road to Recovery: Author Sandra Yuen MacKay will be reading from her memoir on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. Yuen MacKay is a Vancouver-based visual artist and writer who describes her struggle with mental illness in her book My Schizophrenic Life: The Road to Recovery from Mental Illness.
