Books Plus runs in The Tri-City News each Friday to highlight programs and happenings in the Tri-Cities’ three libraries: Coquitlam Public Library, Port Moody Public Library and Terry Fox Library in Port Coquitlam.

 

PORT MOODY

• Splash the Staff: Port Moody library met its registration goals for kids and adult summer reading clubs, so Splash the Staff is a go! Drop by on Saturday, Aug. 6 between 2 and 2:30 p.m. and you may get a chance to splash library staff with water balloons.

• Book a Trip: On Aug. 6 in the PMPL children’s area, you can grab a library passport and travel through the land of stories at this interactive event. Visit Narnia, Hogwarts, Camp Half-Blood, Tatooine and more. Drop in between 1 and 4 p.m.

• Adult Summer Reading Club: Which path will take you to your ultimate summer reads? Summer reading isn’t just for kids so check PMPL’s website for more information on special club events, contests and book recommendations. The club runs to Aug. 31 — register now.

COQUITLAM

Summer activities next week for children ages five and older Coquitlam Public Library include:

• Burnaby Summer Theatre: Check out The Sweet Stink of Victory, following Sophia the Skunk and Chuck the Woodpecker on a journey to save their forest from an infestation. Sponsored by the Burnaby Arts Council, Burnaby Summer Theatre students have been writing, directing and presenting original plays for more than 30 years. This free show runs from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2 at the Poirier branch. No registration required — just drop in.

• Angry Birds: At the City Centre branch on Wednesday, Aug. 3 from 1:30 to 3:10 p.m., there will be a screening of the movie Angry Birds (97 minutes): When an island populated almost entirely by happy, flightless birds is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to three unlikely outcasts — angry Red, speedy Chuck and volatile Bomb — to figure out what the pigs are up to. Registration is not needed for this free program but you should arrive early to ensure a seat as space is limited.

TERRY FOX

• Andy the Musical Scientist: Discover the world of musical science at Terry Fox Library. Andy the Musical Scientist amazes audiences by creating instruments out of recycled items. His show is a meeting place for the worlds of music and science. Using home-made, invented instruments, world music and humour, along with a pro-recycling message, Andy enthrals young audiences with a unique performance at the PoCo recreation centre lobby, Thursday, Aug. 25, 2 to 2:45 p.m.
