FOOD & WINE
If you're 50 or older, you can expand your cooking skills and knowledge of food with instructor Monica Hanser on Mondays this month at Coquitlam's Dogwood Pavilion. Themes are:
April 16: cooking on a budget;
April 23: gluten-free recipes;
and April 30: diabetes-friendly recipes.
Classes run from 1 to 3 p.m. and each one costs $20 plus tax for Dogwood members, $25 plus tax for others; pre-registration is required.
Alternatively, people 19 years and older can join wine steward Laura Murray as she educates you about wine and basic tasting techniques. You can sample reds and whites, and practise evaluating wine.
Class takes place April 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and costs $15 plus tax for members, $20 plus tax for others; pre-registration is required.

Waste Reduction
Residents and businesses in Metro Vancouver generate 3.2 million tonnes of solid waste each year.
Coquitlam's Solid Waste and Recycling team invites you to come to Dogwood Pavilion on Monday, April 16 at 10 a.m. and learn about what the city is doing to increase waste reduction and diversion from the landfill.
The importance of recycling and the ins and outs of how to use Coquitlam's recycling services will be explained. The Green Can program will be highlighted and the presentation will include the opportunity for residents to ask questions.
The presentation is free but registration is required.

GET CRAFTY
You can exercise your creative side by learning the basics of creating jewelry such as earrings with simple loops, wrapped loops, embellished beads and more at the two-week Wirework 101 course at Dogwood Pavilion.
The course runs April 16 and 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. and costs $12.50 per person. Pre-registration is required.
A slightly more advanced course involving bead weaving will be offered following the completion of this class for those interested.

You can learn how to carve intricate creations using wood from two skilled instructors.
Bob Graves will teach you how to make beautiful animals on Wednesday afternoons (the course has already started and runs for nine more weeks) from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.; cost is $37. Al Phillips will teach you how to carve fantasy houses on Monday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. starting April 16; cost is $30.

Yoga & pilates
Yoga and pilates will be combined in a class for people 50 and older running Mondays from April 23 to June 18 at Coquitlam's Dogwood Pavilion.
The classes go from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. those days and Omega Conway leads this program, which aims to stabilize, mobilize and increase the mind-body connection. Participants may increase their endurance, flexibility and balance in static positions and work towards improving strength, co-ordination and balance while in motion.
