SENIORS: Introduction to using transit for seniors

As people age, they often find that driving becomes a less reliable option for getting around. This change leads to a new reality in life: having to navigate the public transit system.

As people age, they often find that driving becomes a less reliable option for getting around.

This change leads to a new reality in life: having to navigate the public transit system.

In order to help senior citizens adapt, TransLink's Access Transit Secretariat is joining with the Burnaby Fall Prevention Society and Voices of Burnaby Seniors to launch TravelSmart for Seniors.

TravelSmart for Seniors is a pilot project in which seniors train other seniors to use public transit. The sessions cover:

fare zones;

ticket vending machines;

security features on SkyTrain, buses and SeaBus;

use of the TransLink online Trip Planner;

and the responsibilities of front-line customer service staff.

Seniors can also participate in community outings that provide a hands-on opportunity to explore many facets of public transit. To help develop the training, members of Voices of Burnaby Seniors went on five transit field trips, going from Burnaby to locations such as Lonsdale Quay and Vancouver International Airport.

Getting around on public transit can be a frightening thought for anyone who has spent much of their life driving independently. Discovering both the practical side of transit and the associated opportunities for greater freedom and social interaction, TravelSmart for Seniors can make it a positive, enjoyable experience.

Training for the trainers is taking place this month and the TravelSmart for Seniors sessions will be held in Burnaby on the following dates:

June 1, Confederation 55+ Centre, 4585 Albert St.;

June 2, Edmonds 55+ Centre, 7282 Kingsway;

June 9, Cameron rec complex, 9523 Cameron St.;

June 16, Bonsor 55+ Centre, 6550 Bonsor Ave.

All sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and registration forms are available at each centre.

After assessing this pilot project, TransLink will seek other seniors' organizations to work with. Interested groups may contact Julie Rogal at Access Transit, 604-453-4587.
